Of course, the city deserves some of your money for going out of business. In a lot of cases, they're responsible for it. If you own a business, they have the Personal Property Tax, a form you fill out while figuring out the depreciation of each class of items, like office supplies (better match your Federal return). That copier you bought and paid sales tax on,well what year did you buy it because you're going to pay a percentage on it for years. You can bet your ass they want a percentage of your inventory one last time, just like La Cosa Nostra. It's legal extortion, but to be fair it is statewide. It's just that in Milwaukee, they also have the DNS- Dept. of Neighborhood Snoops, who can put someone out of business if you're storefront sign is off by 3". They will harass and reinspect for every little thing, charging every time and yet somehow, some violators that I could pick out are allowed to stay in business. I guess its because they have the right alderman's picture in their window.

I submitted an "Open Records Request" Friday to the City of Milwaukee Health Dept.

I asked for a List of all "Close Out Sale Licenses" that have been issued by the Health Dept. for the years 2007 & 2008 and I also asked for the amount of revenue generated by those licenses.

It will be interesting to see if the Home Depot on 76th & Good Hope Rd. had to get a Going Out of Business License and what the value of their inventory was.

The Morning Scramble - 7/14/2008...

know; I did this song before, but Tony Snow’s flute brings a different perspective…

I really need to either start doing a weekend Scramble or start cutting back on the 200+-feed feed reader; this one’s going to be scattersho...

I wonder if the people that get the reward money, http://badgerblogger.com/?p=7232 are taxed on the $10,000's or is it just cash, as you can be anonymous - so how do they know? Do you have to claim it is income?

Note that the majority of the "fee" is based on assessed valuation of the inventory. Smells just like a property tax to me!
