There is no sense of shame with Liberals anymore. They turned the celebration of Coretta Scott King’s life and turned it into a political Bush bashing session. Such a disgrace!
DRUDGE REPORT FLASH 2006®
KING FUNERAL TURNS POLITICAL: BUSH BASHED BY FORMER PRESIDENT, REVEREND
Today’s memorial service for civil rights activist Coretta Scott King — billed as a “celebration” of her life — turned suddenly political as one former president took a swipe at the current president, who was also lashed by an outspoken black pastor! The outspoken Rev. Joseph Lowery, co-founder of Southern Christian Leadership Conference, ripped into President Bush during his short speech, ostensibly about the wife of Martin Luther King Jr.
“She extended Martin’s message against poverty, racism and war. She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar. We know now that there were no weapons of mass destruction over there,” Lowery said.
The mostly black crowd applauded, then rose to its feet and cheered in a two-minute-long standing ovation.
A closed-circuit television in the mega-church outside Atlanta showed the president smiling uncomfortably.
“But Coretta knew, and we know,” Lowery continued, “That there are weapons of misdirection right down here,” he said, nodding his head toward the row of presidents past and present. “For war, billions more, but no more for the poor!” The crowd again cheered wildly.
Former President Jimmy Carter later swung at Bush as well, not once but twice. As he talked about the Kings, he said: “It was difficult for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps.” The crowd cheered as Bush, under fire for a secret wiretapping program he ordered after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, again smiled weakly.
Later, Carter said Hurricane Katrina showed that all are not yet equal in America. Some black leaders have blamed Bush for the poor federal response, and rapper Kayne West said that Bush “hates” black people.
UPDATE: Video
Expose the Left has video. This link is from Hard Ball, they touch on both Lowery and Carter’s speeches and even the former Carter staffer Chris Matthews couldn’t defend what was said at this Paul Wellstone like funeral.
Hat tip on the video to Michelle Malkin

Why couldn’t the service just be nice? Why did they have to bring up the ENTIRE POINT OF HER AND HER HUSBAND’S LIVES, STRUGGLES AND DREAMS?

2 percent approval rating among African Americans. 2 percent. T-W-O percent. If you expect Bush to venture out of his bubble for the first time in years and not hear any criticism, you’re dreaming. These comments are what Coretta was all about. She was smiling down on this moment.

“Why did they have to bring up the ENTIRE POINT OF HER AND HER HUSBAND’S LIVES, STRUGGLES AND DREAMS?”
Best. Comment. Ever.

By the way, why don’t you just change the name of this site to Badger Fascist. It would be much more accurate. Your intolerance for free speech is deteriorating by the day, Patrick.

So McCarthy and others think that a funeral is the place for political rhetoric? How about the fact that President Bush was invited to this funeral by the King family, do you think it is right for a guest that you invited to an event to be attacked? Isn’t a funeral the time to come together out of respect for the deceased? These personal attacks was disrespectful to the King family and to Coretta herself.
Would Coretta or Dr. King himself, have approved of such an attack at an event like this? Of course not, they had way more class than that. And the Kings fought to bring people together, not to divide us!
Jimmy Carter’s rant, to be honest would have had to include the fact that it was Ted Kennedy’s brothers, Democrats, President John F. and Robert, that secretly wire tapped the Kings… It was Democrats like Al Gore’s father, Al Sr. that tried to use the filibuster to hold Black Americans down down and block the Civil Rights Act, but he tried to insinuate that it was Bush and people like him that has done these things.

Note to McCarthy: Just how have I prevented your free speech? I have allowed you to speak, even though I don’t have to.

Very disturbing display at the funeral. See my take at http://badgerlife.blogspot.com. It was my email on Sykes this morning.
Regards.

No doubt McCarthy would have been up in arms if people at Reagan’s funeral used the event to comment at length about how Democrats were and are wrong about Communism and national security, and made fun of Democrat Presidents attending the service.
In fact, I bet when he learned Reagan had died, he was at Kos or DU posting about how happy he was that Reagan died and was going to hell.
And if McCarthy would like to talk about intolerance for free speech, then let’s talk about the speech codes at universities that are written in such a way as to allow liberal students to say whatever they want but consider comments from conservative students “hate speech”. Let’s talk about liberal students at universities throwing pies at conservative speakers. Let’s talk about Democrats trying to bring back the fairness doctrine because they can’t make a go of it in talk radio. And let’s talk about all the Communist regimes that had millions of people imprisoned or killed for dissenting against their government. After all, McCarthy doesn’t seem to think there’s anything wrong with Communism.

Wow Charlie, now you’re blogging within 4 minutes of the end of your show? I knew you were obsessed with me, but this is getting ridiculous.
A funeral should reflect the life of the person who died. Period. End of story. As I said, Coretta was smiling down on this event.
Reagan’s funeral was actually political – the shining city on the hill was mentioned no fewer than 25 times. Not to mention his other taglines. How is that any different?
You guys are just used to Bush’s fascistic ways, where he goes to a public speaking engagement with a heavily controlled audience, and any detractors are escorted and charged with crimes. This was a political stunt by the Bush White House, and he was called on it. Wah wah wah. Want some cheese with that whine? Put Bush on main street in any city in America and this is what you would see. Plain and simple fact.

One last thing before I leave you to your mutual suburban back patting…
You keep saying that MLK was a uniter, not a divider. Ask yourself this question: If you were writing this blog entry in 1965, would you have been calling MLK a uniter or a divider? Sure, looking back it’s easy to call him a uniter, but I can guarantee he was not viewed as a uniter at the time.

“Reagan’s funeral was actually political – the shining city on the hill was mentioned no fewer than 25 times. Not to mention his other taglines. How is that any different?”
How is it political to point out that Reagan preferred to see the good in America, instead of the bad which is all you liberals ever seem to see? I didn’t hear anybody saying “Thank God Reagan saved us from Carter and his misery index and gas lines and kowtowing to Muslim extremists and the Soviet Union and big swimming jackrabbits and fireside chats asking senior citizens to turn their thermostats down to 68 degrees.” As I recall, the speakers reflected on what Reagan actually did and didn’t take potshots at their political enemies.
And as far as I’m concerned, you lefties have no right to lecture us on facism, because all you ever do is stand up for the absolute worst society has to offer. You guys stand up for Castro, Pol Pot, Stalin, Che Guevarra, Sadaam, Mumia Abu-jamal, and the list goes on. You want facism, go over to Cuba and start criticizing Castro and see what that gets you. Or draw cartoons of Muslims and circulate them among other muslims and see what happens. It’s really easy for you to claim America is such a “facist” place knowing that doing so won’t cause you be killed.

And I also notice McCarthy has NOTHING to say about the various ways lefties try to deny their opponents free speech. So I guess I am to assume that to him, free speech ends where liberal offense begins.
