How in God’s name do five Iranian speedboats that were “visibly armed” and believed to be manned by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard get within 200 feet of three US warships in international waters, making threats over the radio?

U.S. Warns Iran Against ‘Provocative Actions’ Following Incident in Strait of Hormuz
I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes.

They also threw boxes into the water in the path of the ships and forced the ships to take evasive action.

What was the commanding officer of these three ships waiting for, an explosion? These people think of committing suicide to kill the enemy is a wonderful thing to do… Anyone there remember the USS COLE?

The ships were said to be within seconds of ordering the crew to open fire before the Iranians broke off, but why did it take so long? The crews of these ships, cruiser USS Port Royal, destroyer USS Hopper and frigate USS Ingraham all have 3-inch guns, .50 cal machine guns and of course the Phalanx CIWS (Close In Weapons System) whose 20MM Vulcan cannon ripping out 3,000 rounds per minute would have turned those speedboats into sawdust.

They were asking for it, why didn’t we give it to them???

Don’t worry, President Obama would know how to handle this.
He’d call Ahmedinizia and they’d do lunch.

  2. Patrick Says:

Maybe Obama will attack an ally to prove his good intentions to IAmIndeedANutjob.

  3. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

If this was anybody but the military I’d say they didn’t have a contingency plan in effect, but I simply can’t believe the military would be unprepared for such an event. This should be included in the Rules of Engagement plan giving the Captain of this ship clear authorization to “neutralize” any imminent threat.

  4. big_hairy_bubba Says:

Not all that much different from the old russian fishing trawlers that used to cut in front of the fleet and dare us to hit them. We couldn’t, of course, but other things sometimes happened, like a high power anti-aircraft radar being accidentally triggered at zero degrees elevation during unscheduled maintenance.

  5. mickey Says:

Trust me Glenn, the U.S.Navy wasn’t going to allow them to get close enough to do substantial harm. The envelope was pushed, but these pussies weren’t willing to die for Allah nor Ahmedeniziad. It’s like a suspect in your custody talking smack, knowing full well you aren’t going to kick their teeth in.
I’m dying to hear our Lib friends weigh in on this. It will be priceless in entertainment value.
This behavior WILL escalate. If we blink, we’ll have problems. Sooner or later, we’re going to blow one or more of these little McAllah’s Navy boats to kingdom come.

I think I’m not the only one who wishes he had a noise cannon.

  7. Patrick Says:

Here is a video of a drill aboard the USS Cole (post bombing) showing what they have to go against surface combatants at close range.

To allow any enemy vessel to close within less than the length of a ship is insane. If all five made a dash at one of those ships, there is a good chance one would have been able to press in and hit. 200 feet should NEVER be allowed!

The difference between this and the Russian trawlers is the Russians weren’t suicidal, these goofs are, and they are already engaged with us by supplying terrorists with arms, explosives and other assistance.

  8. Planet Bob Says:

Listen, the US Navy ships were prepared. Not all 5 were 200 feet from the destroyer. It is highly unlikely that the US vessels were in any particular danger. I imagine that the Iranians were either testing the Navy or some daredevils tried to put on a show. They could have provoked things more and chose not to. Not that I would miss any sleep on their account if things had escalated. It wouldn’t have been pretty (actually it would).

  9. PCD Says:

I’m sure the ships had orders not to fire. Now, if they had, could you all hear the libs scream, “Bush’s Gulf of Tonkin”? Sure you can.

Personally, I’d like to see the biggest guns of the ships take out each boat at 1 mile or so as a warning.

  10. mickey Says:

Planet Bob, no disrespect, but I must disagree with your assessment.
I agree that the United States Navy was prepared. We have the finest, best equipped, best trained and best paid Navy in the history of mankind. Our professionalism can be exploited and has been. U.S.S Cole being an example.
This is where my agreement with you ends.
We are dealing with Iran. Unless you have a clue who and what Iran is, you are at a disadvantage. They’ve done this before. With us, and specifically with Britain last March.
Britains unwillingness to blow these M-F’ing bastards to the gates of Hell, has emboldened them. (learn from History).
You said the could have provoked things more. HOW SO?
I believe you do not understand what is going on here. They provoked us as far as they could have without getting an all expenses paid trip to hell. One more step and these Allah-damned bastards would be Crispy Critters and Libs in the U.S. and elsewhere would be SHITTING THEIR COLLECTIVE PANTS.
These bastards didn’t want to die. If the did, they would have been LOCKED AND LOADED a la the U.S.S COLE….allah/72 Virgins bombers.
If these PRICKS had any intention of escalating further, further would be their own ALLAH-CIDE. These Iranian bastards are playing CHICKEN and testing our RESOLVE.
We won, because up to and including AMERICAN DEATHS, liberals/blame America first losers, will rip US/U.S.. Americans have to die first, before liberals will back our actions. Pelosi and Reids actions have emboldened our enemies. To LIBERALS, the Military and the Bush Admin. is the enemy.
It’s much like how LIBERALS respond when a Police officer shoots a scum bag thug.
Libs piss their pants in grief for the bad guy.
This shit is real Planet Bob. Again P-B, no disrespect to you, I’m sure you are a good dude.
They irony is that these Iranians are COUNTING on our DECENCY. If we are so bloodthirsty and such war criminals as LIB-FRUITBOATS accuse, WHY DIDN’T WE blow these fuqqers back to Hell?

  11. BlueHoudini Says:

Naval vessels are all linked to other naval ships and aircraft carrier air support. Believe me, if the Iranians would have gotten off a few shots over the bow, their ships would have been visiting the shipard grave virgins.

On the other hand, captains of American naval vessels are held to an extremely high standard. If an Amerian naval vessel runs aground at 2 a.m. and the ship’s captain is sleeping, the captain is ulitmately held accoutnable.

So you can bet the captains of these American ships waited until the absolute last minute to fire.

With Bush in charge, I feel comfortalbe, as I don’t see “W”, in this instance, taking any unusual action.

  12. Patrick Says:

I want this brought up to Hillery, Obama and the Breck Girl! What do THEY think should have been done, and what if any changes would they make to the ROE if Iranians approach our ships again.

Does anyone feel that things like this may happen, not to entice America to fire, but to lull us into complacency, so eventually, we might not expect the one charge that is not a bluff? A message needs to be sent to Iran, and that messenger should be a few of these boats and their crews sent to Allah to discover that those 72 virgins aren’t all they are cracked up to be!

  13. Deibert Says:

It was 200 yards, not feet. That’s still pretty close, but it’s tripple the distance that you have in your mind.

Still, open up on ‘em. Once they made the radio threat, I say they are fair game.

  14. Patrick Says:

I have heard everything from 200 feet to 500 yards, all are way to close. Even at 200 yards, that isn’t at all very far, I could blow the head off of a terrorist with my .30-06 from that distance.

I still want to know what an unqualified President Obama would do in this position.

  15. mickey Says:

Obama would work to restore our reputation with the Iranian people and he would apologize for us inciting Iran.

  16. PCD Says:

I would have liked to see a video on the internet of these Iranians dancing with a couple of Ma Deuces. While a 5″ shell or a 500Lb bomb makes a mess of these Iranian floating coffins, being riddled with .50BMG rounds would be interesting to watch.

Any of you get passed the video of a 500lb bomb taking out a mob of terrorists who thought they were going to kill a few Marines? It isn’t for the Liberal or squeamish.

  17. Peter Says:

Don’t forget The Huckster. He’d try using the Golden Rule with Iran.

  18. big_hairy_bubba Says:

Catfish Huckabee? He’d let them sneak into the country, get them jobs in the chicken plants, make the local governments and courts hire farsi translaters so they didn’t have to learn english…

  19. David Says:

Ron Paul has been quoted saying we should pull our Navy away from Iran. He would also drop all sanctions against this terrorist financing regime. It is good of Iran to show their true colors every now and then.

  20. Patrick Says:

A clip of video has been released, it shows just how close those speedboats were, and how quickly they could have closed the distance with our ships.

  21. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I just happened to catch a Fox News interview with one of their military analysts – General McInerny – who said that the Iranians were “testing us” and “we blinked”. He said the mullahs do not acknowledge “restraint” as anything but a sign of weakness and that the Captains of those ships should have blown all 5 of the Iranian vessels out of the water as soon as their threatening radio transmission was made. McInerny said that the Commanding Officer of Centcom needs to make the Rules of Engagement clear.

I couldn’t agree more with this analysis.
