Friday night about 9 PM, a MPD officer from the Sensitive Crimes Division, backed up by four uniformed police officers went to a home near 28th & Capitol looking for a man suspected of multiple counts of molesting two children, ages 6 & 10. He was also wanted on a probation violation for a burglary. They were allowed into the house by a family member, and the suspect showed up a few minutes later.

As is all to common with these thugs, he resisted the officers and pulled a knife, and refused to drop it. One officer fired his weapon, striking the man in the chest. But the wound was minor enough to have been treated and released to the police a short time later.

Sounds to me like the Officer’s response was consistent with his training. I would add that with several Officers present and in danger of being attacked, there was considerable restraint on the part of the other Officers who did not fire their weapons. It’s refreshing to read in the official press release and the newspaper article that the Department quickly acknowledges the proper actions of the cops.

After reading the headline I thought MPD was issuing 9mm knives.
Seriously, I think there is a mentality of “suicide-by-cop” going on. They know they’ll get shot, so they’ll take a cop with them and be a marter in the community.

  3. Patrick Says:

Yeah, I did sort of screw that headline, didn’t I? LOL

Just a reminder of what the Alderthug said the last time police shot a man with a knife.

  4. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Hey Patrick, see if you can dig up anything related to what the Department said in response to the shooting McGee is yapping about in this video. Might be interesting to see the then and now Department response

That’s exactly the image I had, too.

  6. spanky Says:

To bad the shot was not fatal. Now ya’ll are going to pay for his prison time. Till he gets out to molest again.

    Another one bites the dust.
    Another one bites the dust.
And another one’s gone, and another one’s gone.
    Another one bites the dust.

Who knows how many children are safe now that this guy is taking the Eternal Celestial Dirt Nap?

  8. Peter Says:

Now I read the update … he hasn’t assumed room temperature as of yet. We can only hope, can’t we?

  9. Patrick Says:

Wishful thinking Peter, but I had the same hopes.

Glenn, I don’t remember a department reaction, but I know that around the same time he spouted off on this issue, he was also blasting our firefighters and paramedics for not rushing into a violent crime scene before police arrived. That outburst got a lot of reaction from firefighter websites and message boards from all over the country.

The man’s a fool, he just has to prove it now and again.

  10. Patrick Says:

I did find reaction from Sheriff Clarke and Ch. 4′s coverage.

  11. PCD Says:

After his conviction, put this perp in the general population. He’ll wish he’d have died from being shot.

  12. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I wasn’t testing you Patrick. I just wanted to confirm what I remembered of the Department response. This was the response to that Capitol Drive shooting as reported by Channel 4 (your link): “We have four officers who discharged their weapons,” Police spokesperson Anne E. Schwartz said. “Each officer believed that they were in immediate threat or that their fellow officers were in immediate threat because of the proximity in this area and the fact that the suspect was lunging at them with the knife, swinging at them with the knife.”

It was also reported in that same link that Hegerty responded to the shooting scene and later to the hospital after she had received word that an Officer had been shot. No response by her reported in the Channel 4 link. And I don’t recall any later reponse by her either, yet Sheriff David Clarke on Charlie’s show (your link) responds briefly to the shooting and then to McGee’s rant about how Officers should never shoot anyone who has a knife. I don’t recall any Department response to that one either. Not even an explanation of Department training on how to engage a suspect with an edged weapon (knife or other deadly sharp object)if that suspect is 21 feet or closer to the Officer. (I remember participating in such training in March 1993 during one of our In-Service classes at the Police Academy.) We were taught that it was very possible to be fatally stabbed by someone who was at or within 21 feet and was attacking us. Even if we were to draw our weapon and fire at the 21 foot mark, the suspect still had an opportunity to continue his approach and stab us.

On another note, I just read in the jsonline that Flynn will be holding another press conference Monday evening announcing a crime fighting initiative in and around the Sherman Park area. Let’s see, the guy’s here just under 2 months and this will be his 4th press conference to announce a crime fighting initiative – all in different Police Districts. I’d say he understands the problems and is confronting them head on without any orders from the Fire & Police Commission (2003 to Arthur Jones) or challenges by politicians (early 2007 to Hegerty by Alderman Bob Donovan).

Be careful, Glenn… you might be accused of being “insidiously sexist” for praising Flynn too much…

Wow! This Fair Play person is really distorting what I’ve said and is so far behind the times regarding his/her/its comments about the Civil Claim I filed (and never followed through on by the way). And this person actually wants people to think his perspective is conservative? Even Stevie Wonder can see that’s not the case.

  16. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Fair Play? Pretty odd name for someone who can’t take the time to get the facts straight.

  18. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Nah, I don’t write to those people. If she wants to come here I’ll be happy to bore her with the details – not that the truth will matter to her. She’s already made up her mind that I’m a sexist pig.

  19. HeatherRadish Says:

I find the idea “women can’t possibly be incompetent” kinda sexist, myself.

  20. Amy P. Says:

Nan Haegerty *was* incompetent. It has nothing to do with her gender. She just didn’t have the cojones to do what needed to be done. Flynn does and happens to be a man.

Believe me – if I were police chief – I’d be doing the exact same things as Flynn.

  21. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Heather, it strikes me as kind of odd that after I’ve been pointing out the shortcomings of Hegerty and the escalating violent crime in Milwaukee for the last 4 years, that someone would just now decide that I was being sexist. And I say this in all honesty, had Hegerty been a success and reduced crime during her tenure, I would not be dumb enough to criticize her as she would have certainly appeared to have made the right decision with me. But as it turned out, history does not support her decision and actions.

I would also add that there are a number of female Officers who worked with and for me who could provide significant evidence to refute anyone’s allegations that I was sexist.

I will be focusing my attention on Ed Flynn and his crime fighting efforts from this point on as “the horse is dead” and no longer needs beating.

  22. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

    Thank you Heather and Amy.

  23. Peter Says:

Proof that women can be incompetent? Hillary.

  25. Clint Says:

I was going to say my ex-wife – but you guys beat me to it.

In a equal world, if we can have incompetent men, then why can’t we have incompetent women?
