Here is another topic which deserves better coverage than I can dedicate to it tonight, but as a quick overview, Governor Sarah Palin’s personal Yahoo email account was hacked and the contents, including personal pictures and email addresses and they even got the cell phone number of Palin’s daughter, recorded her emails and posted it all on several websites. This clearly illegal and unsavory activity quickly caught the attention of the Accomplice Media (term stolen from Jay Weber, because it fits so well when talking about this crime). Several media outlets publicized this hack and the results of it, and once the Secret Service and FBI began investigating, they refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

It seems that the “hacker” wasn’t too bright, within hours, the Secret Service had tracked down the proxy server used and they easily traced it back to a 20 year old college student… But wait, it gets better… He is the son of Tennessee State Representative Mike Kernell. Yes, of course, he’s a Democrat.

Why in God’s name would anyone… ANYONE think it is a good idea to commit a crime against someone that is already being protected by federal officials?

Michelle Malkin has been all over this story.

Before anyone questions if hacking a personal email account is a big deal, just ask Larry Mendte…

Fired Philly TV anchor admits hacking e-mail
A fired TV newscaster admitted Friday that he hacked into his co-anchor’s e-mail accounts, pleading guilty to one count of illegally accessing a computer.

Larry Mendte admitted that he illegally viewed hundreds of Alycia Lane’s e-mails from March 2006 to May 2008, at a time when leaked information about her personal life contributed to her downfall.

Mendte faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.

I want to know where all the folks that were wringing their hands over potential civil liberties violations at the hand of the Bush Administration trying to listen into enemy communications are.

Why aren’t they crying over the violation of civil liberties and privacy invasion now?

    Where is that same outrage?

  3. Roland Melnick Says:

Russ Feingold, the ACLU and NOW would be 3 persons/groups you would think would be outraged over this given previous stances on privacy invasion and the rights of women. However, the reality is the first two only care about the rights of suspected terrorists and criminals, while the third only cares about liberal women, not all women.

On the example of NOW (National Organization for Womyn), well known feminist Gloria Allred made an appearance on Greta Van Susteren’s On The Record last night. Greta, Gloria and a couple others were discussing the hacked email story. Everyone, even other Democrats and a defense lawyer, were flatly stating this was wrong and those caught should be punished…end of story, except for Allred. What did the “most famous woman attorney practicing law in the nation today, a tireless and successful advocate whose high-profile legal battles on behalf of victims whose rights have been violated have led to many landmark precedent-setting court decisions…” have to say about this story???

She harped endlessly about her “grave concern” that Gov. Palin could be using a Yahoo account to conduct government business in order to avoid any FOIA disclosures. Greta interrupted her, rightly stating that there is no evidence that Palin did that, not in the material that was stolen and turned over to “gawker.com”. Allred refused to move off this point and merely repeated herself. Greta closed off her remarks with a simple, “I prefer the presumption of innocence.” Gee, being an attorney, you would think Madame Allred would be familiar with that basic tenet of our legal system.

With a hat-tip to Ol’ Broad, here is some more interesting info on this developing story from Terry Frank.

  5. Jaeson Says:

Holy crap Roland, if that comment on her blog has any merit, and Plouffe or however you spell his name, has a connection with this kid, say goodbye to the Obama campaign.

Which might be a bad thing, if it spelled the end for Obama, it might bring the stepford wife back out of mothballs.

  6. Roland_Melnick Says:

…say goodbye to the Obama campaign…

Since He is the Messiah, it would take an act of God to wipe out his campaign…so don’t get too excited.

The only reference I saw to David Plouffe was by a visitor to Frank’s site. Maybe I misread that commenters instructions, but I didn’t see a clear connection between Plouffe and Kernell…not saying there isn’t one, just saying I didn’t see it.

  7. Jaeson Says:

What he’s suggesting, I think, is that the kid probably produced the videos of Ploufe that you always see, for the campaign. That tehre may be a professional relationship of sorts, or at the very least an internship perhaps. But as I see, if the comment has any merit. We’ll see.

    http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/soetorobama-supporter-mike-kernell-d-tn-confirms-his-son-david-kernell-hacked-sarah-palins-email-to-help-soetorobama/

  8. Roland_Melnick Says:

That hillbuzz link doesn’t look like a reputable report, Jaeson. The Knoxville News Sentinel had this report. We’ll see what the investigation turns up. I suspect that if it shows Junior Kernell did it, it will end there. Regardless of the truth, these things rarely go too far up the ladder.

  9. Jaeson Says:

At this point everything is conjecture and speculation, until the FBI and/or Secret Service release a statement and/or conclude their investigation. However sifting through various blogs while sometimes are not reputable, can nevertheless give up some potential clues. Until the real story is released, everything is worth taking a look at.

I doubt it will go far up the ladder. My guess is that if the kid was working for the campaign, being in College it was probably in some kind of internship capacity. I’m sure that he would have acted alone, not at the orders of any campaign manager. Nevertheless, if any of this speculation turns out to be true, he would have been a part of the campaign, and he would have done this.

  10. Jaeson Says:

And let’s face it, bloggers are typically ten steps ahead of AP these days anyway. Plus, reports are that AP has refused to cooperate with the investigation, which isn’t surprising since their in the pocket of the Obama campaign, so I wouldn’t really call an AP story entirely reputable these days.

  11. Roland_Melnick Says:

I’m not dissin’ the abilities of the collective blogosphere, but Rep. Kernell admitting his kid did this would be big news. Plus, what was with that blogger’s continual use of “soetorobama” in his post? Is he an idiot who can’t spell, or am I missing something?

  12. Bill Says:

And not one of you is going to address that it’s been widely reported that Palin used said Yahoo! Mail account to conduct official government business, potentially a crime.

    http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/091608/sta_333013278.shtml

While I am in *no way* justifying the actions of the person who impersonated her and broke into her email account, you can’t just make a post like this, portraying her as a victim, and turn it into an attack on Democrats.

  13. stalker3 Says:

    Let me get this straight:
A Democrat member of the US House of Representatives has a son who uses dirty tricks against efforts to reduce the number of votes for Republican candidates.
Is this an isolated incident, or was this inspired by Gwen Moore and her radical, racist son Supreme Solar Allah?
The Brownshirts are at it again.

  14. Jaeson Says:

I’m not dissin’ the abilities of the collective blogosphere, but Rep. Kernell admitting his kid did this would be big news.

You’re exactly right. There was no indication in the article that that actually happened, it’s a misleading title.

However some of the reader comments on the page are interesting, and can be potentially leads. Or not.

Plus, what was with that blogger’s continual use of “soetorobama” in his post? Is he an idiot who can’t spell, or am I missing something?

Yeah, I don’t know what the hell that’s all about. But even a blind horse can find water sometimes. Sometimes it can pay of to pay attention to the crazies.

  15. Shelly Says:

soetorobama, that’s funny. Google gets 2,730 hits on “soetorobama”.

  16. HeatherRadish Says:

Maybe Rep. Kernell “should have the done the job of a responsible father and paid more attention to what his teenage son was doing with his life.”

    *cough*

  17. Roland_Melnick Says:

Apparently there was a question as to what Obama’s real last name is/was…Soetor and Dunham being two alternate possibilities. At least that’s what a Google search of “soetor” showed (4930 hits by the way). I don’t know much about it, all I can say is that it mainly seems to be talked about in fringe ultra-right and rabid pro-Hillary circles.

Is there anything Google can’t find?

    Good zinger Ms. Radish.

  18. Roland_Melnick Says:

    Bill, you said:

And not one of you is going to address that it’s been widely reported that Palin used said Yahoo! Mail account to conduct official government business, potentially a crime.

This is untrue. There has been wide speculation and a presumption of guilt by folks like you, however the “wide reporting” has not provided any evidence that Gov. Palin used personal email for official business. If there is evidence out there, please post it. The nifty little story you cite didn’t show any evidence, just a bunch of accusations.

…you can’t just make a post like this, portraying her as a victim…

She is a victim of a crime.

…and turn it into an attack on Democrats.

Reason dictates we wait until the investigation into who did the hacking is over, I’ll give you that…but early indications point to family of a Tennessee Democrat politician. Besides, the First Amendment says we can pretty much post what we want here. You can disagree, formulate arguments, huff-n-puff, leave, complain, troll like meepos, etc, etc…but you don’t have the right to silence us.

  19. Jaeson Says:

And not one of you is going to address that it’s been widely reported that Palin used said Yahoo! Mail account to conduct official government business, potentially a crime.

Then explain why suspected terrorists shouldn’t be apprehended and incarcerated, if infornation is gained through wire tapping.

  20. gus Says:

I was quite certain that Supreme Solar Allah had nothing to do with this. The only “hacking” he does is with a knife.

  21. Jaeson Says:

    Bill O’Reilly’s website hacked:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/20/fox_news_bill_oreilly_hacked/

The internet sure is doing a great job of revealing the true nature of the “tolerant” liberal.

Hopefully this will result in a few more of them getting shawshanked. But I won’t hold my breath.
