Well, don’t expect any long posts from me for a while. This morning on mt way to the garage, i hit a patch of ice and WAMMO! I knew as soon as I hit the ground that i broke my left arm. i didn’t even look at it, just dragged myself off the ground and drove to St. Joe’s.
After x-rays and stuff, they confirmed it was busted, a “left distal radius fracture,” and the broken part is sort of shoved into the wrist bones, so that means surgery on Tuesday. So, for the next few weeks, i will have lots of time on my hands… well, one hand anyway, but i don’t know how much posting the vicodin will allow. so you will all have to cut me some slack on capitalization and typos
never thought I would say this, but I would rather be at work…

the most frustrating thing is, i just bought a nice pair of gloves Wednesday… and they had to cut it off my friggen hand.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Oh no!!! We’ll get you some new gloves
I can’t WAIT to see vicodin posts – those can be fun! Heal up soon…
January 9th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Patrick new gloves are on the way. I’m sorry about your injury.
I’ll send you a little care package.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
At least this happened before the gummint took over health care. They’d have just amputed your arm and told you it was your duty to go home and die if gangrene.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
That would never happen, Peter–amputation costs money, so Milwaukee gets twelve a year. But they’d have put Patrick on the waiting list…
Patrick–Hope you feel better! Add me to the list of people to contact if you need anything.
January 9th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I hope you didn’t have to wait too long in the emergency room.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
@GOPgal, it was actually pretty quick, got there about 6:30am, was taken to a room in the ER within minutes, vicodin well before 7am. 1st doc was there maybe 7ish, about a half hour wait for x-ray, seen another doc 20 minutes later and surgeon came in as that doc was leaving. the worst part was the prescription at Walgreens took 45 minutes. oh yeah, the real worst part was sweeping snow off my car in the ER parking lot.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Stupid ice! Stupid snow! Get well soon.

Patrick, I’ve had several visits to St Joseph.
A broken hand in 5 places when I was a teen.
But about 10 years ago, I tore my ACL. July 3rd I tore it, July 4, I went to St Josephs. They looked at it and told me I aws fine and that they had too many gunshot/stabbings to handle could I just take it easy on it for a few days.
It was completely ruptured. They didn’t even give me an aspirin.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Oh man, Patrick. Sure hope you feel better soon!
January 9th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
hope the vicodins help… I personally can’t wait to read blogging while stoned from you…
January 9th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Vicodin, eh? Maybe you’ll become indecisive like Favre
January 9th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Bummer Patrick, feel better my friend.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Ouchies!!! Sorry to hear about your fall and broken arm. I hope the medication keeps the pain to a minimum and your surgery goes okay. I guess you won’t be attending the Drinking Right session coming up this Tuesday. Right now I’m contending with tennis elbow in my right arm from all the silverware buffing I do at my job. Get Well Soon!
January 9th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
That sounds incredibly painful…get back on the mend soon! And if you start seeing butterflies coming out of your tv, you’ve taken too many Vicodin.
January 9th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Sorry to hear about this, Patrick. I think most of us can say something to the effect of “but, by the grace of God, it was not I…” I have lost count of all the slips and falls I’ve taken in the last week…
Speedy Recovery!
January 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Got AFLAC?
January 9th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
yeah, fortunately i do have insurance.
Micky, thanks for the thought, but these were special gloves, the fingerless kind that have a flap that makes them like a mitten. i have a few others like it, but i finally found a light weight pair that fit just right… oh well lol
January 9th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Patrick, I just heard about what happened to you. Bad break
I was babysitting all day and away from my machine. If you need anything let me know.
January 9th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Heal strong and quickly!
January 9th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Broke my ankle some time ago slipping on the ice. Be cautious of clots. Not uncommon. Take care and be well!
January 9th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Hope the surgery and recovery are uneventful and boring.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Good luck with the surgery and rehab. At least the one glove still works.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
At least you weren’t far from medical help…10 years ago I broke my shoulder while riding logging trails outside of Crandon, WI. My host had some left over Vicodin in his cabin that he gave me for the 45 minute drive (at extra-legal speeds) to the hospital in Antigo. Worst part was riding out of the woods on the back of an ATV to get back to the cabin. Once at the hospital, nurse gave me a shot of Demerol…that’s the warm-n-fuzzy good stuff!!
PS: check your email Patrick

Paul, oddly enough, i was at Menards wednesday (where & when i got those gloves) with mt buddy and we seen those strap on ice cleats and joked about them. one of the first things he said to me yesterday was “see you should have bought those things”
January 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Patrick, my care package will be at your door Monday. Just think of me kindly once in a while!!!!
Good luck buddy.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Yeowww! I know that hurts and will inconvenience you till spring. But looking on the bright side,,, at least you have one good arm. Cheers!
January 10th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
i always think kindly of you micky… well, mostly
this vicodin doesn’t do much for the pain, but it sure puts me to sleep. i can’t wait until tuesday when he will be able to set this bone right, a splint just doesn’t do the job of a cast.
January 10th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Best wishes for a quick recovery!
January 10th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
you can see where it busted, and my hand is not lined up straight.

January 10th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
OWWWWWIE. OMG..I’m so sorry…that’s gotta really hurt, even with teh vicodin.
Do hope surgery goes well for you. And if ya really need another pair of those gloves, I found a few here at tractor supply store which just opened here.
Wishing you a speedy recovery for sure. And always know I’m thinking of you.
I hate boo-boos…specially big ones like that.
Not to mention the people who will miss out on your oh so gentle care with transporting them while you recuperate.
Take good care of you…and yes…I’d also love to see a few posts with you doped up on vic’s lol.

Jewleelyn…wow, LTNS Chicklett!
January 11th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Oh Patrick, that does look like it hurt – I’m so sorry! I took a spill in the Chevy garage on the floor full of slush and goop and banged up my knee but thankfully nothing broke – except my composure!
But sorry, that doesn’t make you feel any better, does it. Take it easy, heal quickly and thanks for keeping us posted. Godspeed.
January 12th, 2009 at 7:52 am
I hope you have a speedy recovery.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:43 am
monday morning: getting ready to see the doc for pre-op exam. touched base with insurance co. vicodin my not be a good idea, started itching after last dose (not bad, but enough), may need something else for pain… like a stick between mt teeth

January 12th, 2009 at 8:45 am
who needs ice packs? it’s 7 degrees, i’ll just stick my arm out the window.
i hate not capitalizing letters… typos are left to you to deal with
January 12th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Way to get out of shoveling! Just rub some dirt on it.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
MICKY / GUS / ANYTHING ELSE HE WANTS TO BE CALLED IS ‘DA MAN!
might be a few weeks before i can get those gloves on my paw, but i’ll put them to good use, the hat goes with me in the morning… i’ll tell the doc not to get blood on it. Thanks!
January 12th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Patrick,
I am so sorry about your arm. Good luck with the surgery tommorrow.

Monday update: an interesting day, got about 4 calls from the St. Joe’s surgical center, talked to 5 people all asking the same basic questions.
Talked to the surgeon and he explained the procedure and the break its self a little better. it seems that it wasn’t just a break, it was several breaks, the end of the bone was sort of shattered, that is why he has to use the plates and screws to hold it all together. the good news is with the screws, i will be in s splint for only a week or so if i understood right. still will not be able to lift for 6-8 weeks, but that leads me to some good news….
Took a ride to work today and spoke to my boss. Turns out he had some ideas about my time off. He asked if I would be willing to do some training of new employees. this is something I have done in the past, didn’t really enjoy it, but now that I have the bum paw, this is just what the doctor ordered. It won’t be full time, but using it with my vacation days, it will beat the hell out of going 6 weeks without a paycheck.
I’ll try to post something tomorrow if i am up to it.

Patrick, check for allergies when you take the Vicodin. I’m allergic to Tylenol and it’s generics, so when I have to take serious medication, I take Ibprofen + codiene. Be careful.
January 13th, 2009 at 6:40 am
dan, i actually did have a minor reaction to the vicodin, the doc switched me to percocet and seemed more effective too.
i woke up at 4am this morning in the most pain i have had since day 1. haven’t had a pain pill since yesterday afternoon, but i sure needed one this morning. the doc said i could take them with a small glass of water this morning if needed, i did, but was wishing it was a big ‘ol cup of coffee instead
I could take 2 pills, but just took 1 to take the edge off the pain.
sure will be glad to get this splint off my hand, that had caused me more discomfort than the compound fracture! he says the one he puts on after surgery will be more comfortable… it has to be, it couldn’t be less
