Premier in Ukraine Quits, Giving Way to Opposition Rule
Viktor F. Yanukovich resigned as Ukraine’s prime minister on Friday, signaling the end of a tumultuous political drama that nearly propelled him to the presidency but resulted in his defeat after a popular uprising against state-sponsored electoral fraud.

Mr. Yanukovich, who was prime minister for two years under President Leonid D. Kuchma, said he would continue his legal challenges against the repeat presidential election last Sunday, in which the opposition candidate, Viktor A. Yushchenko, appeared to hold a commanding, if unofficial, lead.

New Year Predictions

Friday, December 31st, 2004

I’ll go out on the limb here and make a few predictions for the upcoming year.

The Eagles and Steelers will be in the Super Bowl and the Steelers will win (as a Packer fan, this kills me!)

The Iraqi elections will happen on time with relatively little disturbance. There will be isolated attacks, but I believe Democracy will prevail!

By the end of the year, insurgent attacks will be rare in Iraq and most security will be handed off to Iraqi forces. The US will maintain a strong presence, but troop levels will be down.

Kofi Annan and his top people will be forced out of the UN as the Oil for Food scandal comes to a head and it becomes clear that he has been on the take for years,

I don’t see Pope John Paul making it as Pope another year. Sad

The Yankee’s will win the World Series behind Randy Johnson’s 24 wins.

Bloggers will continue to hound the media and the media will continue to launch it’s ineffective attacks that only make the Blogs stronger.

Fahrenheit 9/11 will win the Oscar for best picture along with several other awards while The Passion of the Christ will be totally snubbed. A few nominations, no awards.

New leadership for the Palestinian people will do little to change the death in Israel, after a brief lull the suicide bombings will resume by mid year.

A major terrorist attack will be stopped in the United States, but I also fear that at least one will succeed.

Feel free to stop at my message board and leave your predictions too, in a year we will compare notes and see how bad we did ;)

The Latest From Washington State

Friday, December 31st, 2004

Found this via Powerline, that Washington State Governors race may not yet be over. As I stated last week, they didn’t stop recounting until the Democrat won, but more stink is rising from this pile!

Power Line: The Latest From Washington
Conservative blogger Stefan Sharkansky pointed out the discrepancy Wednesday, and by yesterday it was Topic A among Rossi backers and Republican Party officials.

Party Chairman Chris Vance said it could be the “smoking gun” needed to overturn the election.

The number of King County ballots counted in the final tally was 899,199 - 3,539 more than the number of participating voters reported in the county’s list.

Stingy This UN! $350 Million Plus from the Stingy Americans

Friday, December 31st, 2004

Add to the Governments pledge of $350 million the already $8,824,508.44 and counting donated through Amazon.com’s Red Cross donation link, not to mention all of the other private efforts.

U.S. Pledges $350 Million in Tsunami Aid-Official

The United States will provide $350 million in aid for victims of southern Asia’s devastating tsunami, a government official said on Friday.

Details of the aid package were still being worked out and it was not clear whether the money was in addition to the $35 million already pledged, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Bush had said on Wednesday that the initial U.S. pledge of $35 million was only the beginning.

A magnitude-9 earthquake a day after Christmas triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 124,000 people in 13 countries. The death toll continued to rise as more bodies washed ashore and hundreds of thousands of people remained without food, clean water, clothing and shelter.

Great Column on Bush bashing at this time

Friday, December 31st, 2004

This is so on target!

JOHN PODHORETZ
IT’S ABOUT THE TRAGEDY - NOT MORE BUSH-BASHING
THE political and ideological exploitation of perhaps the worst natural disaster in all our lifetimes is almost beyond belief — were it not for the fact that nothing these days is beyond belief.

Even as tears spring into the most hard-hearted person’s eyes at both the unimaginable scope of the tragedy and at the wrenching individual stories of loss, opinion leaders just can’t help themselves.

They are using this cataclysm as little more than cheap debate fodder about the nature and character of the United States, its president and its citizens.

Organ Donation

Friday, December 31st, 2004

I heard Mark Belling talking about this a week or so and intended to blog a bout it, but it slipped my feeble mind, but I had my memory jogged, so here we go.

Illinois lawmakers are thinking about making organ donation binding, meaning that it is you that makes the decision, not a grieving loved one at an awful moment in their lives. As it stands now, in I believe the entire country except for Pennsylvania, you can sign your drivers license and or sign up for a registry of organ / tissue donors, but it really isn’t you that get’s the final decision. Your next-of-kin has the final say on whether it is allowed or not.

This is a huge burden to place upon someone that just found out that you have died, or they may be dealing with a decision to remove you from life support. To lump this decision on them at that time has always seemed cruel to me and I would hate to be a doctor that has to come to the family to discuss this, it’s got to be horrible!

This legislation will remove that burden from the grieving family and allow you to give this final gift to someone in great need. So often, a persons wishes are not carried out because the decision is thrust upon someone that may not be thinking clearly, or may not even know that it was your desire to donate.

On a slightly off topic and personal angle here, I do ask that if you wish to donate at the time of your death, let your family know your wishes. It may be hard and even a bit ghoulish at the time, but tell them that you want to give the gift of life to someone, or in your death, you want to improve the life of another needy person. There are many people that need transplants, as of now, there are almost 87,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list…Including a friend of mine that is in need of a liver. I’m thinking of you Johnny Bro!

For those that are not sure if you want to donate, think about how you would feel if your child were sick and needed a transplant to save their lives. You would be begging for someone to give this final gift. I hope that when my time comes, I am able to help another person, or in many cases, several people since several organs and tissues can be harvested and used to help others. It’s the right thing to do.

To read more about the Illinois case, please check this article, then sign your license and let your loved ones know your intentions so your last wish can come true.

A nice spring day….WAIT A MINUTE!

Friday, December 31st, 2004

Today is a lovely spring day in Milwaukee….WAIT A MINUTE! It’s the end of December…Where is the snow, the ‘Frozen Tundra’?

Today, December 31, 2004 it is 52° and sunny. Last night we even has a thunderstorm! A week ago, believe it or not, we were hovering around zero or a little below for lows and highs in the single digits or low teen’s.

I know the Global Warming claims are all based on junk science, but if this is Global Warming, I’m all for it! I think I will run to the store and buy a few cans of hair spray so I can spray them into the air and keep things warm around here! ;)

Caution to Donors on Tsunami Relief

Thursday, December 30th, 2004

The Better Business Bureau has put out some good information to help make sure disaster donations end up in the right pockets. There are a lot of phony charities that spring up when there is a great need. Please read this article before you donate.

Charlie Sykes: A YEAR OF FOLLIES IN REVIEW

Thursday, December 30th, 2004

Milwaukee talk show host Charlie Sykes has a very funny “Year In Review” column out. It has some Wisconsin issues that others around the country may not understand, but it really is funny enough for everyone, here is a teaser

At their convention, the Democrats showed off their strength by trotting out Jimmy Carter; their honor by featuring Bill Clinton; their moderation by featuring Al Sharpton; and their common touch by giving Teresa Heinz Kerry a prime time spot. And they have no idea why they lost.

Check out the rest:
