Wisconsin National Guard heads toward New Orleans

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Good, I expect this sort of thing is going on around the nation.

Gov. Jim Doyle tonight mobilized 500 Wisconsin National Guard troops to assist in the recovery efforts in hurricane-ravaged areas of Louisiana.

Among the Guard units mobilized, is the 832nd Medical Company in West Bend. Other guard units that were mobilized are from Madison, Oshkosh, Janesville, Waupaca and Eau Claire.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, two Blackhawk and three Huey helicopters with about 50 personnel will leave for Louisiana within the next 24 hours.

Ground troops with 5-ton cargo trucks – with enough ground clearance to make their way through flooded areas – will follow within 48 hours.

Carroll College votes to unionize

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

The private Wisconsin college, Carroll College, has voted to unionize. They will be no better than public colleges within a year or two, and that’s a real shame.

Carroll College faculty members have voted to form a union and seek collective bargaining.

Ballots boxes locked up since February were opened today and the votes were tabulated at the National Labor Relations Board offices in Milwaukee.

The results show that 57 faculty members voted to form a union, while 39 voted against the idea. Five votes cast by librarians opposed to a union were thrown out after the union challenged the librarians’ eligibility to vote.

The United Auto Workers is seeking to represent an estimated 100 faculty members at the private, four-year college in Waukesha.

The results of February’s election were put on hold after Carroll administrators sought to block the faculty union by arguing that federal labor laws would infringe on religious freedom at the Presbyterian-founded college.

The NLRB last week rejected the religious freedom argument.

Citizens for a Safe Wisconsin

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Citizens for a Safe Franklin have changed their name. Since they have taken their fight to protect our children state wide, they will now be known as Citizens for a Safe Wisconsin.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CITIZENS GROUP ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGE

Franklin,WICitizens for a Safe Franklin will now be “Citizens for a Safe Wisconsin - Advocating for Tougher Sex Offender Laws”.  The name change takes effect immediately.

“The new name more accurately reflects the scope and activities of this grassroots, volunteer effort” said Shari Hanneman, President of the group.  “Protecting our children from sex offenders and sex predators is a state-wide issue.”

The group was formed more than a year ago in an effort to fight the placement of 12 sexually violent persons (SVP) on civil commitment in Franklin, Wisconsin.  Since that time, the group’s membership has grown and the focus has expanded to protecting all citizens of Wisconsin. Citizens for a Safe Wisconsin (CFSW) are working with a number of State legislators to change the laws so a comprehensive statewide sex offender management program can be implemented. Some of these changes are:

(1)   Repeal the 2003 Wisconsin Act 187, Sec. 7m that allows for the creation of a site-placement committee to find a site for a group SVP housing facility.

(2)   Amend Chapter 980 to include:

§         A 2-phased supervised transition plan for all sexually violent persons which includes GPS monitoring for life.

§         Allow the courts to authorize the placement of sexually violent persons in another state/county/city that requires GPS monitoring and provide specified funding to the entity that accepts these persons.

§         Require that, for a county of the first class, a sexually violent person approved for release be returned to the city, town, or village in which they were convicted, or to a county/state that has agreed to accept that person.

§         Sexually violent persons who file a petition for release must include in their petition acceptable suggestions for their placement.  These persons, deemed sexually violent, should show a diligent attempt to provide for their own housing and personal sustenance within the statutory guidelines.

§         Sexually violent persons may not be placed in a location that is within 3,000 feet of a school, playground, daycare, children’s shelter, school bus stop, or place where children congregate.

(3)   Improve the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry and the information provided to citizens.

Senator Mary Lazich and Representative Jeff Stone will introduce a bill spearheaded by CFSW within two weeks.  The bill which includes the above objectives will improve the safety for Wisconsin’s communities.

Members of Citizens for a Safe Wisconsin will testify at a hearing in Madison before the Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Committee on September 7th  2005  in support of AB 591.  This bill sponsored by Representatives Scott Suder and Joel Kleefisch would require GPS monitoring for sexual predators and level 1 and 2 sex offenders.

“We’re pleased with the reception we received in Madison.  Senators and Representatives from both parties have made sex predator and sex offender legislation a priority.  We hope a coalition of legislators and citizens can effectively change the way Wisconsin manages sex predators and offenders” said group spokesperson Sandy Maher-Johnson. “Wisconsin must protect our most valuable and vulnerable citizens from these criminals”

Listen to Brett describe how his family is dealing with the hurricane. His wife is hosting some 50 family and friends and Brett’s mother and other family members faired much worse, but are still alive.

Gas Price
Most stations are still at $2.99, some are $3.25, but this one was by far the highest I’ve seen so far.

Refining facilities

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

We have seen what one hurricane has done to our refining capability. Hurricane season isn’t over yet folks, what if another one rips through the gulf and takes out refineries in Texas? What if there is a fire? Terrorism? Just a routine breakdown that seems to happen every year?

We haven’t been allowed to build a new refinery in America since the mid 1970’s. We need to ignore the environmentalists and build more and scatter them around so they are not as vulnerable. This is crazy!

We also need to stop with this reformulated crap! There are parts of the country that get reformulated gas that has to be made special, this limits the amount and slows production of “straight” gas they can produce.

Gas in the Milwaukee area is at about $3.30 $3.39 a gallon. So much for talk of a Gas Tax Holiday, huh?

25,000 to be bussed to Houston

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Reports are that 25,000 people will be bussed from New Orleans to the Houston Astrodome, this will serve as a sort of refugee camp as flood waters continue to devastate New Orleans.

Do we rebuild? How can we? Should we? If built on the same location, this could happen again next year.

The Navy is rushing ships to the area to supply drinking water and manpower. A byproduct of their nuclear reactors is fresh water.

New Orleans Looters… Shoot them on sight!

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Kill those rabid dogs of human society. Police are trying to save lives while human debris loot stores, one cop has been shot in the head by a looter.

Steal a car, run from cops, kill a kid, get 4 months

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Steal a car, lead police on a high speed chase, crash and kill a 13 year old boy and get sentenced to a whopping 4 months… That’ll teach him!

JS Online: Teen gets 4 months, victim’s father says
A 14-year-old Waukesha boy who was the driver in a high-speed chase with police that ended in the death of a 13-year-old passenger was sentenced to four months in a juvenile correctional facility, the father of the boy who was killed said Tuesday.

Terrence Holliman spoke one day after Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis barred the Journal Sentinel from covering the proceedings in Juvenile Court that resulted in the boy’s sentencing Monday in the June 23 death of Terrence Holliman Jr.

Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis also has a bug up his butt over someone identifying this punk kid, apparently stemming from an interview with the killers grandfather, but the boy himself was NEVER identified by name, but it was enough for Davis to bar any Journal Communications media outlet from covering the case.

I would think he would want to bar the media so they didn’t learn about the lame sentence Judge J. Mac Davis imposed… 4 months

Note: Wi. Dems to put out “Voter ID” plan (UPDATE: Scott Walker Responds)

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

This afternoon the Dems are going to propose a “Voter ID” plan…Notice there is no “Photo” in the name and don’t expect to see that word anywhere in the bill.

More comments tonight after the plan details are released.

Scott Walker Responds

Walker Says Democrat Election Plan another Hoax on Wisconsin Citizens

“”I ask the legislature to send me legislation to truly protect our greatest right in a free and open democracy””

Wauwatosa… Wisconsin Democrats along with their leftwing leader Jim Doyle are once again trying to deceive the people of Wisconsin, says Milwaukee County Executive and Candidate for Governor Scott Walker. Walker was referring to a plan announced today by Wisconsin Democrats that would continue to give Wisconsin’s election system a black eye.

“I authored the first voter ID bill four years ago and liberals from Madison (Chuck Chvala & Jim Doyle) continue to block it,” said Walker. “Jim Doyle and the Democrats must understand that failing to require a photo ID opens up our election system to those who would desire take votes from law-abiding citizens.”

Walker unveiled his plan earlier this year to clean up Wisconsin elections by:

  • Requiring a photo ID be presented in order to vote
  • Eliminate same day voter registration
  • Return absentee ballots to their original purpose - people who are absent on election day
  • Legal requirement that those who register voters be trained by local clerks/or elections officials

By contrast, Walker said that Jim Doyle’s plan is nothing more than the current system with a new set of curtains. Doyle’s plan will:

  • Allow anyone to swear that they are who they claim without any real proof
  • Leave our system open to illegal voting by those who would conspire to steal elections
  • Give no assistance to local elections workers as they work to determine who should be voting on Election Day

“Jim Doyle’s plan would continue to make Wisconsin the laughing stock of the nation and do nothing to take away our reputation as the “Banana Republic” of the United States.” Walker said.

Brett Favre’s family home destroyed

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

At least everyone is safe, but Brett’s family home got hit really hard.

JS Online: Favre learns family home destroyed in Mississippi
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spent most of Monday and Tuesday nervously waiting to hear from family members in his hometown of Kiln, Miss., in the heart of the Gulf Coast area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Packers said Favre finally spoke to his mother, Bonita Favre, late Tuesday afternoon when she was able to reach him with the help of a Houston television station, which was in the area covering hurricane damage.

According to the team, Favre said his mother reported spending Monday night in the family attic, along with his grandmother, after the entire house filled up with water within a matter of 5-10 minutes, much like a tsunami.

Brent Moss: Another drug conviction

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

What a terrible waste. A young athlete with a pro career ahead of him, all shot to hell because of drugs. He still claims that he doesn’t have a drug problem…What a mess he has made of his promising young life.

Brent Moss, former UW star, sentenced in Racine

Racine - A former University of Wisconsin-Madison star football player whose professional career aspirations were dashed when he was convicted of cocaine possession was sentenced today in Racine County Circuit Court for again possessing the drug.

Brent Moss’ eyes filled with tears as Racine County Circuit Judge Gerald Ptacek Öordered him to face 30 months of probation, mandatory drug testing and counseling for depression stemming from an incident in 2004.

According to a criminal complaint, police found Moss and a female companion sitting in his Buick, and as an officer approached, Moss appeared to try to hide something under the seat.

Police ordered Moss to exit the car, but Moss appeared to go into an attack stand, according to the complaint. When officers grabbed his arms, he broke free. Officers had to use a stun gun and pepper spray before handcuffing him. The officers found cocaine inside the vehicle, the complaint said.

Moss had pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of possession of cocaine and obstructing an officer.

“You need to take responsibility here,” Ptacek said. “I can’t change the past for you - nobody can.”

Moss stated in court that he did not have a drug problem, but Ptacek disagreed and ordered that Moss seek professional drug and alcohol counseling. Moss has admitted to abusing marijuana and cocaine.

Moss currently lives in Racine and works in construction. He has two children and owes about $18,000 in alimony payments, court records show.
