Update on Regina Bakala

Friday, September 30th, 2005

The other day I was driving past St. Mary’s church and wondered how things were going with Regina Bakala. If you don’t know who Regina is, she is a woman that fled to America to escape torture in her native Congo. Her crime… Voicing her democratic beliefs.

After she escaped from The Congo, she came to America, married a man that also fled the brutal Mobutu dictatorship and settled in the Milwaukee area. Regina and her family have become part of St. Mary’s Parish in Hales Corners, where Regina works in the school (She was the principal of a school on The Congo), and to all accounts have been active tax paying, upstanding people that have come to live the American Dream. Regina and her husband have two children, both American Citizens. You can learn more about her story at SaveRegina.org/reginatory

Back to my reason for posting, after passing the church in Hales Corners the other day, I came home in search of information. I looked up the SaveRegina.org link and found that it was still active, so I sent an email inquiring on Regina’s status. Today, I received the following email from Sister Josephe Marie. If you have been following the case, you will remember Sister as being a major part in the effort to free Regina and was the spokesperson for the effort. The email I received gives us an update, so I share with you.

So you’re the Badger Blogger, Patrick Dorwin! Well, thank you so much for inquiring! The “case status” on our “Save Regina” Website, www.SaveRegina.org, is all that we can say at this current time, but we hope to start sharing more at the beginning of November or thereabouts. Regina’s court date will not be set until she goes to what’s called the “Master Calendar Hearing,” a brief court appearance in Atlanta near the end of October. After the court date is set for her all-important hearing, we will definitely need more fundraisers and more loving prayers — which means keeping her story “out there.” We just got word two days ago that Attorney Sfasciotti will allow us to do that after the Master Calendar is set. So please wait just a bit longer, okay? Meanwhile, Regina and David are very grateful for the outpouring of support which opened up this miracle for her so far. Thank you!
…and yes, you may post this communiqué on your blog.

Sister Josephe Marie

I know I have encouraged people to donate generously to hurricane relief efforts, but Regina could use some help too, it is going to a great cause and we all know how fast legal bills can mount up, so if you can, they have a link on the website that will show you how to help. Also, continued prayers are always a good thing :D

Journal won’t re-open New Orleans printing plant

Friday, September 30th, 2005

They demand that everyone else do all they can and more to rebuild New Orleans, but when it comes to the Journal, it becomes “Do as I say, not as I do.”
JS Online:Journal won’t re-open New Orleans printing plant
Journal Communications Inc. said today it will not reopen its hurricane-damaged New Orleans printing plant.

“It is always difficult to close a facility, but long-standing weakness in that business and uncertainty about current and future prospects due to the impact of the hurricane drove our decision,” Steven J. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Journal Communications, said in a statement announcing the move.

Wisconsin to be federal hub for stem cell lines

Friday, September 30th, 2005

But…I thought Bush doesn’t allow stem cell research… At least that is what these folks keep telling us, now I guess they have to admit their lied to us all along, right? We know they will never admit to the obvious.

JS Online: DayWatch
Wisconsin is poised to be the nation’s first and only hub for federally approved human embryonic stem cell lines.

Gov. Jim Doyle will announce, on Monday, that the University of Wisconsin-Madison will become home to the National Institute of Health’s National Stem Cell Bank.

The role of the bank is to acquire, store, characterize and distribute those human embryonic stem cell lines already approved for federal funding. It will provide a centralized warehouse for these lines, with the purpose of maintaining uniform quality control and reducing costs to researchers.

Over 200 millions gallons of sewage dumped

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Milwaukee dumps 200,000,000 gallons of raw sewage into Lake Michigan, but the DNR goes after land owners that have a pier of the wrong shape in state lakes… Those jackbooted morons really have their priorities straight, don’t they?

News Talk 1130 WISN: Over 200 millions gallons of sewage dumped
The metro area’s sewerage district said Friday it dumped about 200 million gallons of wastewater into Lake Michigan and area streams after heavy rainfall earlier in the week. The district dumped the wastewater over 13 hours Sunday night through Monday morning as up to 4 inches of rain fell in the area. Most of what was dumped was rainwater, said Bill Graffin, spokesman for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. Power surges knocked out equipment at a wastewater treatment plant, which limited the amount of sewage it could pump into the deep tunnel sewage storage system, according to the district. The sewage was dumped from combined sewers that carry both storm water and sanitary waste, Graffin said. Under terms of the district’s operating permit, the district can dump from combined sewers up to six times a year. It was the district’s first sewage dumping this year. After heavy storms in May 2004, the district dumped 1.7 billion gallons. The state Department of Natural Resources cited the district for some of that dumping.

We are the mean spirited ones?

Friday, September 30th, 2005

The kind compassionate liberals at Air America are now calling for people to “beat up” Republicans, either with the pen or the sword.

Blogs for Bush: The White House Of The Blogosphere: With Love, From Air America

These are the same people that thought it was funny to run their skit in which they pretend to shoot the President…But we are the mean spirited ones, right?

As I understand it, they have yet to repay the $480,000 “loan” that was supposed to go to the inner city children and elderly.

DPI still fighting Virtual Schools

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Wisconsin DPI still attacking virtual schools. Here is a press release from Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families. (All links .pdf format)

WCVSF Release Sept 28 05.pdf
A coalition of public virtual school supporters believes the state Department of Public
Instruction (DPI) is trying to pull a fast one on the Wisconsin education community. The group is warning a panel of experts, convened by DPI, that they unfortunately may be wasting their time.

“Despite convening a high profile panel to study the issue of virtual public schools, DPI continues their assault on this educational option through the courts and by spreading blatant lies through the press,” said Rose Fernandez, President of the Wisconsin Coalition of Virtual School Families.

Roberts Confirmed to be Supreme Court Justice

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

This is good news on more than one account. Not only was the President’s nominee confirmed, but it shows how deeply the Democrats are divided. All of the Liberal special interests were pushing Democrats hard to show that they were unified, in an effort to intimidate the President into nominating a more liberal justice to replace O’Connor. They have to be steaming after this vote! Roberts actually got more votes than Rehnquist.

FOXNews.com - Politics - Roberts Confirmed to be Supreme Court Justice
John Glover Roberts Jr., has been confirmed as the 17th chief justice of the United States.

The Senate voted 78 to 22 in favor of sending Roberts to be the top judge of the land Thursday as President Bush’s selection to replace the late William H. Rehnquist. It was the first vote for a Supreme Court justice in 11 years. Roberts will head to the White House later in the day to be sworn in.

Ahh, I love a brisk morning!

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

I’m sure our guests from New Orleans would disagree, but the past few mornings have been GREAT as far as I am concerned! It feels like we are approaching my favorite day of the year, the first morning with frost on the ground… But it is supposed to warm up again over the next few days, too bad :( we could keep these low 40’s to keep me happy.

How Mary Landrieu plans to spend $250 Bullion of our dollars

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

If they can’t jail her for her threats against the President - twice, she should be jailed for the pork she wants to spend our tax dollars on.

Arkansas Clinic Offers Free Abortions

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

~sigh~

Arkansas Clinic Offers Free Abortions - Yahoo! News
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A doctor has offered to perform free abortions on hurricane evacuees, saying it may be too dangerous for them to wait until they return home.

Despite protests from abortion opponents, Little Rock Family Planning clinic director Dr. Jerry Edwards said he has already performed six free abortions. The clinic usually charges between $525 and $600 for a first-trimester abortion.

“If we didn’t provide it now, they would get it later — a late-term abortion that would give greater risk to the mother’s health,” Edwards told KTHV-TV in Little Rock.

Edwards, who runs the only abortion clinic in central Arkansas, was unavailable for further comment Tuesday, a clinic employee told The Associated Press.

Rose Mimms, executive director of Arkansas Right to Life, said Edwards is risking further traumatizing women who have already lost their material belongings. “This just adds to the devastation these women already have in their lives,” she said.

Asian ladybeetle will be bad in Wisconsin this year

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

My parents in West Central Wisconsin have had to deal with these pesky critters for the past several years, they get literally thousands of these things a day. They look like the common lady bug, but they bite and stink of you crush them, and other animals and birds will not eat them, so they have no natural enemy here. In areas where these things are common, people literally have to vacuum these things up several times a day. They work themselves into the woodwork and when the house gets warm, they come out all winter long, a real pest!

JS Online: Time For Beetlemania
Get ready to be bugged.

Wisconsin’s warm and dry summer was kind to the multicolored Asian ladybeetle, and state conservation officials said Tuesday that they expect the little spotted creatures to begin massing in large numbers after the first freeze.

Last year’s relatively wet summer kept the beetle population lower, but this year, the beetles will make their fall debut in bigger numbers, said Linda Williams, a forest health expert with the Department of Natural Resources. The beetles are susceptible to a fungal disease, which is more prevalent in wetter years, Williams said.

WISN Talkstar

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Way back on August 12, the winner of the Milwaukee Talkstar competition was reveled, we were told that the new show would start in September, but here we are, a few days from the end of the month and as far as I know, there has been no information at all given to the public. I sent Jerry Bott an email a few days ago, but as usual, no response…

I dedicated a lot of time to that competition by posting an update every day of the entire event, but I guess I, and the other loyal WISN don’t deserve an answer.

UPDATE! WOW

Wow, no sooner than I posted this and Mark Belling announced that “the lefty woman” will be starting her show Monday, Oct. 10. Wow, talk about action

-UPDATE-

Sounds like Dan Deibert will be staying on as co-host and Pat Crowley will be doing sports. Dan & Pat have made a great team! Jamie Larson will stay on with the news, I was hoping she would get a bigger part of the show, she is really entertaining.

Belling has been ripping the show and station management. I wish I would have recorded this! GO GET’EM MARK!

Maybe they will finally update their website… but I doubt it

Belling is wondering how long it will take her to file a law suit

Belling is on one hell of a roll, he is hilarious!

NOTE: I have added a copy of the Press Release that WISN sent to me, you can find it in the comments of this post.
