The State Senate Committee on Agriculture, and Insurance has passed the mandate that would force everyone in Wisconsin use reformulated gas, a proven poor fuel that damages engines. I don’t have a breakdown, but I do know Neil Kedzie voted against this expansion of government power, he was the only Republican that did.

Sen. Kedzie: Takes First Vote Against Ethanol Mandate
State Senator Neal Kedzie (R-Elkhorn) says he is disappointed that a bill forcing ethanol on Wisconsin residents has passed the Senate Agriculture and Insurance Committee. Kedzie explained, “Simply put, this is not sound public policy. This measure is incredibly flawed beginning with the premise of a mandate forcing a product on Wisconsin consumers. In addition, this proposal is a double edged sword, as ethanol has potential negative environmental impacts, which could have serious consequences for our state’s existing industries.”
According to Kedzie, a government mandate of any product runs counter to our free market economy. He added that ethanol, or any other product should either succeed or fail based on its merit in the marketplace, rather than by being forced upon residents by an over-reaching government. Kedzie noted that if Wisconsin consumers want ethanol, they will choose to purchase it.
As Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Transportation Committee, Kedzie has expressed concerns that the mandate will be detrimental to existing air quality problems in southeast Wisconsin. Kedzie pointed to a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) study that demonstrates that the ethanol mandate will increase pollution twice as much as the NOx decrease of the current motor vehicle inspections and maintenance (M&I) program in Southeast Wisconsin. Kedzie stated, “When this occurs the federal government will step in and impose costly clean-up procedures on business. We cannot afford to chase away Wisconsin’s manufacturing base nor the good paying jobs that go with that sector unless we want to see another significant economic downturn in the state.”
The committee voted 4-2 to recommend passage of Assembly Bill 15 (AB 15). Kedzie was the only Republican on the Committee to vote against the bill. He noted he is hopeful the mandate will not pass the full Senate if scheduled for a vote.
