On a super secret blatantly obvious mission, months worth of backroom secretive negotiating culminated in ex-President Bill Clinton posing for trophy pictures with Mr. Il in exchange for the freedom of two reporters, Euna Lee and Laura Ling.
Instantly after the story of Clinton’s N. Korean trip broke, I saw all sorts of dripping wet praise for Clinton the hero. I even saw evidence that Bush Derangement Syndrome is hanging on more stubornly than the H1N1 flu bug. Posting from the same perspective, and probably from the same basement, was this gem of a comment…perhaps an aspiring lefty blogger.
Now, only a rube would believe that Clinton went to North Korea and negotiated their release in under 24 hours. Granted…Bill has a way with the lay-deez, but I highly doubt he personally accomplished anything. A more likely explanation was that, after  Obama (also desperate for a win) ran down a list of available big wigs or former big wigs and Mr. Il made his pick. After all, Mr. Il has certainly heard of Bill’s ability to charm the babes…and when he compared that to his typical Saturday night in Pyongyang, he obviously saw the opportunity to elevate his social skillz. All that and Arric Barwin must have had a previous commitment…and Al Gore must not have been acceptable.
Ok…seriously…
The arrest of Lee and Ling was such a sham. Only a nation with a joke of a legal system would simply hand over two prisoners who had allegedly been found guilty of an offense worthy of a 12-years-hard-labor sentence. And, in exchange for what? Obama will sell this as proof that he can play well with others, unlike that “cowboy” we were stuck with for eight years. When has North Korea ever cared about its negative image? Who knows when, if ever, we will ever learn what we actually had to give in exchange for Ling/Lee.
Ling and Lee are now home…good for them. I’m sure they are nice people. Their story is really a story of, yet again, it’s who you are and who you know; a principle that trumps sound foreign policy in the Obama Administration. Do you think the three Americans that have been arrested in Iran and are now being accused of being spies will get the Ling/Lee treatment? Will Obama’s White House go through months of backchannel talks to figure out what Ahmadinejad will take in exchange for his American commodities? Commodities you ask. Yes…now that Obama has shown he will barter with goofs like Mr. Il, does anyone think we won’t see more of this type of sham imprisonment? People in such circumstances are therefore commodities…not legitimate prisoners guilty of any real crime. These unfortunate folks are now bargaining chips.  If you travel to one of the rougher corners of the world, watch your back.

I think N. Korea was looking for a way out while saving face, and having Bill show up provided that service. I think even the cukoo nations of the world recognize what was going on here and I hope/pray/don’t think it will start a bunch of copy-cats.
I can’t get too worked up over this, unless it turns out we secretly gave away Guam.

This mess was caused by a Democrat (Al Gore)and was cleaned up by a Democrat, obama. Just that picture in the post will be used as propaganda by North Korea.
Just wondering, if it had been two men, would Obama done the same thing. My gut and brain says no.

Generally, the policy of the US is to protect its citizens worldwide. That is a benefit of citizenship in this country, and it is a legitimate expectation.
The question is: “At what cost?”
I don’t question ‘rescuing’ citizens. I AM concerned about what we paid for them.

My goodness, this is a win-win-win. For bo, bill and Ling/Lee. My guess is the rescue was held until just the right time… OK need a positive…time to pump up the poll numbers.

Yes. “At what cost?” is the major question here. That will eventually leak.
It’s called kidnapping. And the Obama team just made it much more lucrative.
On vacation here in Nags Head, I caught the arrival live-broadcast. Lord, there is nothing that can ruin a vacation faster than the site of the pompous Al Gore mouthing at a microphone.

I do not think anyone is claiming that Clinton did this by himself. Every news story I have seen on this has stated that 95% of the deal was worked out prior to Clinton even leaving for North Korea.
