Signs like this are plastered all over the Southern half of Arizona, not just the immediate border areas, some as far North as 30 miles South of Phoenix. The US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management does a pretty good job of itemizing the dangers. Notice that there isn’t any denial that the problems exist.
Meanwhile, the good people of Arizona have been working to make their State a safer place to live and work, which included a new State law that mimicked existing Federal law…Arizona SB1070. Adopting Federal law into the laws of individual States is nothing new, despite the rhetoric decrying this as an unprecedented power grab by a “rogue State.”
The recent controversy over SB1070 was fueled by the wrath of pro-illegal immigration advocates and hyper-partisan Liberals/Progressives who were willing to write off the whole State as nothing but a bunch of racists. A typical tactic aimed at bullying their opponents into backing down, which leaves little room for finding solutions to real problems.
Only Arizona didn’t back down. Proving to be the opposite of the Great Uniter, President Obama ignored the appeals of his Arizona constituents and preferred to send in the Justice Department to quash their efforts.
Rather than work toward real solutions…rather than show support and understanding for the problems faced in Arizona…the Federal government opted to post these signs around the State. The following is from an article in the Washington Times:
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose county lies at the center of major drug and alien smuggling routes to Phoenix and cities east and west, attests to the violence. He said his deputies are outmanned and outgunned by drug traffickers in the rough-hewn desert stretches of his own county.
“Mexican drug cartels literally do control parts of Arizona,” he said. “They literally have scouts on the high points in the mountains and in the hills and they literally control movement. They have radios, they have optics, they have night-vision goggles as good as anything law enforcement has.
“This is going on here in Arizona,” he said. “This is 70 to 80 miles from the border - 30 miles from the fifth-largest city in the United States.”
He said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but what he got were 15 signs.
.
It would seem that the message being sent over 1700 miles from Washington D.C. is…”que sera sera.” So many people predicted Obama would surrender Iraq…who would have guessed it would be Arizona instead?
So why the controversy here? Wouldn’t you be up in arms with these problems in your backyard? Who can honestly say that seeing a sign like this in Kettle Moraine State Forest or any of Wisconsin’s parks and wildlife preserves wouldn’t drive you to demand action from your lawmakers and law enforcement officials? Arizona has a greater responsibility and more worrisome concerns to have time for what the Milwaukee County Board, the MATC board, the MPS school board or some other like-minded group that decides to get loony and stick their uninformed, pretentious noses into this issue.
When the federal government is issuing warnings against travel into certain areas within the United States, I think we are well past the point of condemning State and local officials for taking matters into their own hands.

If Obama wasn’t such a spineless socialist, we’d have the Army, Marines, and National Guard armed and on the border protecting OUR country. Democrats go to HELL or MEXICO, your choice.

Democrats need a new batch of voters for mid terms and 2012.
It’s that simple.

Those guys up in Montana were right.

Obama currently owns this problem and fighting Arizona instead of helping them is making the situation worse…but this problem has been a bipartisan one…at least at the federal level.

Hey c’mon Obama has allowed for 30 National Gaurd.
That’s more than enough to make sure the 15 signs are fully protected.

Roland. Obama is the President. He can fix this problem INSTANTLY if he chooses.
But he didn’t choose to did he Roland. Nope. In fact when BIPARTISAN Arizona legislators voted to protect THEIR STATE and CONSTITUENTS, Obama had HOLDER sue them.
Obama IS the problem. Period.

gus, are you an editor for Cliff’s Notes in your spare time?

I certainly hope the crews that put up those signs were union.
Where are the LSD’s (Liberal-Socialist-Democrats) that are always crying about the environment?
There’s so much crap that those pigs leave in what once was a pristine environment that it looks like vandals attacked.
Seriously, the active duty military needs to be deployed to the border. We have many bases down there that could be used as staging areas. This is a war and I can’t believe there would be a posse comitatus problem if troops are kept within a few miles of the border. They could provide protection for engineers to continue building the fence. MP’s could assist CBP officers at the border crossings.
Of course I’m dreaming, this will never happen, even when we see assassinations and car bombs. Obongo will have plenty of time for golf and vacations in 2.5 yrs.-or less.

There is an interesting show on the National Geographic channel called Border Wars that is currently airing new episodes in its second season. While it is similar to the TV show, COPS, it takes a different approach where there is a voiced-over narrator who gives background info on what’s being seen in the footage.
I’ve only seen two episodes so far. They covered a couple drug busts, chasing down groups of immigrants, busting up a couple human trafficking groups and so on.
It also covered a sad story of a woman caught with her teenage daughter. They were left behind by the group and their “guide” (aka “coyote”…aka “human trafficker”) because the girl, who had asthma, was slowing them down. When caught, the mother/daughter pair had been wandering aimlessly; lost for two days in the Texas countryside. They were so dehydrated they could barely walk due to extreme joint pain. The CBP agents who arrested them probably saved their lives.
One of the human trafficking segments was about a raid on a layover house in the town of Alton, Texas. A layover house is where groups entering the States stop to rest up before getting some transportation toward wherever they plan to go. The CBP and local police arrested two traffickers and 25 illegal aliens. Only 5 of the 25 were from Mexico.

No Roland, I’m just a wee bit smarter than you.
September 4th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
That may be, gus…but I haven’t seen any evidence of it here.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:38 pm
Well I must be smart. I mean in my spare time I edit Cliff’s notes. Right Roland?
Roland, when you made that comment, you thought you were being funny. I have no idea why you think you can make smart ass comments and not be responded to in kind. You mentioned that OBAMA owns the Arizona problem. I agree. I went further to point out how ridiculously easy it would be for Obama to take a problem and fix it.
You then made a comment about Me editing Cliffs notes.
If your Cliff’s notes comment was not meant to be smarmy, then I misjudged you and I apologize.
If your comment was meant to be a slight. Then I wonder why you felt the need to say it, without responding in any way to my comments content.
My comment pointed out that Obama is PRESIDENT.
Whether the problem was created by both parties is not relevant to the fact that OBAMA can fix it.
He is President and he can fix it NOW. He has no intention of fixing it.
Sorry to ruffle your feathers Roland. I’m told by a good friend that you are a great guy.

Your initial response to my post was basically a condensed version of what I wrote…hence the Cliff’s Notes reference. That is what Cliff’s Notes are, right? I had no other response to your comments because they restated what was in my post.
Considering the source, how you saw that as a slight is beyond me. Now if it had been Foust or one of his many aliases….
September 5th, 2010 at 4:08 am
Thank You Roland. So what you are saying to me, is that your intent was not to be smart ass nor snarky??? I accept that and I apologize for being harsh.
Roland. Your reply is heart felt.
I am so sorry to have misjudged you. Roland. You are a decent guy, and you would always give me the same benefit of the doubt.
I am sorry to have been rude to you.
September 5th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Fair enough…no harm no foul.
A certain somebody’s forehead is exploding with bitterness over your magnanimity…if only you could see the vulgar commentary our filters sift out. Dude is whacked.
September 6th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Yes, I’ve heard about it in private.
Thank you too Roland.
September 6th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
I feel like there’s something I’m missing, some inside joke I’m not privy to. Do tell, gents.
Please. Give up the goods.
September 6th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
Actually, Rawson…there’s nothing you’re missing. Check this blog’s “trash” folder. You’ll see a guy who I honestly believe suffers from an unhealthy obsession or possibly even an obsessive personality disorder; I would have to know more about his personal behaviors to evaluate that.
He used to post under his real name until he was banned. We strongly suspect him of posting under at least one, but possibly as many as 4 aliases.
The reason I suspect that he has an illness is because most normal people who find something distasteful move on with their lives. For example, in this context, there are certain blogs with which I can’t abide. I expressed my disagreement and/or displeasure, never returned and left it at that.
Someone with an unhealthy obsession will do things like submit 40 separate comments after it has become painfully obvious they have been blocked from posting. Each comment a personal insult directed at one or more of us that was far worse than anything ever published here or in any of the WI blogs I’ve seen.
At first, behind the scenes the mods here at BB laughed at the ridiculous submissions. As they continued, we started to analyze him as you would an unruly child in need of correcting. Now they’re just checked “Move to Trash.”
Hey…if such vitriolic ranting prevents the guy from beating his kids or kicking the family dog, then rant away. We’re big boys…we can take it.

He’s a Rascal.
