Today’s first PolitiCrap deals with a claim made by the The Oshkosh Northwestern. They claim that Senatorial candidate, Ron Johnson “sought stimulus funds for renovations to the Grand Opera House.” The fact is, this never happened. Ron Johnson was the treasurer of the board while they were looking to renovate this building. It was another person that offered to look into the possibility of getting stimulus funds.
At no time did Ron Johnson support seeking this money, and he did not ask the person offering to make the inquiries, to proceed.
From the Johnson campaign:
“This is not an email from Ron Johnson. This email is from an outside party mentioning Ron’s name in the context of the stimulus. Ron may have asked a question or two, but this email is in no way an implication or a possible representation of Ron supporting the stimulus. Ron did not ask the sender of this email to seek stimulus funds on his behalf. Asking questions about an issue does not indicate support.”
When the paper was questioned about this claim by a PolitiCrap contributor, they refused to show any substantiation of further evidence they claim to have.
The bottomline, as one of the team writes: The newspaper ran “a story based on a claim off of an email based completely on hearsay.”
