Scenes from Friday’s AFSCME 48 “We Hate Scott Walker” Rally, held in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. Executive Director Rich Abelson makes clear to politicians the one thing AFSCME members will absolutely never tolerate: Any budget cuts of any kind.

Abelson’s quote of the day: “If you hate government, don’t run for public office.”

Those annoying background noises are the idling of a diesel generator and the eight private buses that brought the roughly 250 green-shirted attendees to the scene.

This classy lady is Annie Wacker, VP of the Milwaukee Area Labor Council. She paints a haunting picture of a world without public employees, before she really ‘fires up the crowd’ with her anti-Walker chanting.

What’s being criticized here? Free speech? The right to peacefully assemble?

  2. mr. parker Says:

    ” What’s being criticized here?”
    Hate speech.

  3. Roland_Melnick Says:

Yeah…we’re so anti-free speech around here we let you drop your little snarky bombs, Michael. Meanwhile I see your blog is still “invite only.”

  4. MichaelJMathias Says:

Roland, as for the free speech here, two of my recent comments have been deleted, And my blog isn’t “invite only,” it’s “inactive.” I’ve explained this you in the past.

Mr. Parker-if that qualifies as “hate speech,” you are thin-skinned indeed.

  5. Zach W Says:

Michael, if you want free speech this isn’t the blog for you.

  6. mr. parker Says:

“Mr. Parker–if that qualifies as “hate speech,” you are thin-skinned indeed.’
Hey, don’t compare me to obama.

  7. Calvin Says:

Huh, they didn’t bother to mention they wouldn’t have 26 furlough days if they would take the same concessions that others that work for the county have already taken.

    Skippy, really? What a hack.

They are so creative with their chants. Sounds like second grade.

  8. Bruce Says:

Zach W” says: “Michael, if you want free speech this isn’t the blog for you.”

Spoken by the guy who once asked us (when I had posting privileges, way back when) to censor speech here out of respect to his family.

Which, in a move that seemed right at the time, we did.

Never got a “thank you” for that from Zach; in fact, all he’s ever done since is bash this blog for what a bunch of “bullies” you all are.

Zach’s been watching this blog today like Chris Liebenthal watches an unguarded donut. My guess is that Zach is a member of a public employees’ union, and doesn’t much like that the unsympathetic cameras have been turned upon his own side, for once.

Zach, you and your union folks are child-like in your ambitions. Your favorite toys are being taken away from you, and you don’t much like it.

    Welcome to the real world.

“My Freedom of Speech is absolute, yours is not. I have the right to edit or delete comments if I see fit to do so.”

That’s what I was referring to Bruce.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Patrick Dorwin Says:

“Walker, you liar, we’ll set your ass on fire…” Classy from a public employee union thug.

  11. Bruce Says:

Seriously, that’s all you’ve got, Zach?

When your head hits the pillow tonight, I sincerely hope you’re proud of this battle you’ve waged.

Would it surprise you to know that I’m doing the Autism Walk tomorrow morning? Much like honoring your requests, Zach, I don’t do it for the accolades.

Stick with the game plan, Zach. Making friends and influencing people everywhere you go. Keep up the good work.

  12. Paul Says:

Don’t worry. In a few short weeks, the voters are going to wipe that smug look off Zach’s face.

  13. PCD Says:

What WI needs is a wholesale house cleaning of Liberal Socialists from the government and judiciary, then crack down on the illegal activities of the Democrat party and unions.

  14. Jaeson Says:

    @ Zach’s comment #5

I wonder if you realize the irony in your comment, which has been allowed to stand.

Apparently, Zach misunderstands both the statement from Badger Blogger as posted in comment #9, and the general concept of free speech in general.

Did anyone want to go through the trouble of educating this poor lad?

If not, I’ll take on the task myself a bit later.

  15. Roland_Melnick Says:

Your blog is inactive Michael? First time I’ve heard that. How is showing a video with some minor criticism of what was said inhibiting their right to assemble and speak, Michael?

Today, Zach complains we do not honor free speech rights. Tomorrow he’ll demand we censor comments he doesn’t like.

  16. Roland_Melnick Says:

“Walker you liar, we’ll set your ass on fire!”

Sounds like a threat to me. Maybe the title of this post should have been, “Union Official Makes Threats of Arson Against County Executive.”

Threatening violence to get a pay raise…how enlightened.

  17. MichaelJMathias Says:

Gosh, Roland, I am sorry I didn’t check in with you before I stopped blogging. That was incredibly inconsiderate of me.

  18. MichaelJMathias Says:

Who’s BadgerBlogger staff anyway? Is that Schaller’s new pseudonym ?

  19. gus Says:

    Michael Matthias has returned,

    I wonder why.

  20. Roland_Melnick Says:

Gee Michael…what a vitriolic response to my simple comment that I didn’t know you were no longer running a blog. It’s not like you and I communicate outside the blogosphere, so when I try to go to your blog only to be locked out…how else am I to know whether your blog is still active or not?

Returning to the topic at hand, Michael…I asked you a simple question in direct response to your first comment:

“How is showing a video with some minor criticism of what was said inhibiting their right to assemble and speak, Michael?”

Did you come here looking to exchange ideas, have a debate? If yes…here’s your opportunity. You have my attention.

Or did you just come here to be a snarky troll?

  21. gus Says:

Roland, like most liberals. Michael Matthias is an unhappy jerk.

  22. PCD Says:

Debate to a liberal is they lie you have to accept their lies without rebuttal.

  23. Albigensian Says:

“My Freedom of Speech is absolute, yours is not. I have the right to edit or delete comments if I see fit to do so.”

Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one. ~Abbott Joseph Liebling, “Do You Belong in Journalism?” New Yorker, 4 May 1960
-> Of course, “owning a press” was a big deal in 1960. Today, anyone can “own” a [Word-]press.

In any case, surely “free speech” in this case is similar to freedom of association. An association has the right to restrict membership according to its own criteria, because if it did not than any organization could be destroyed/hijacked if enough people oppose it. Similarly, freedom of speech for a blog owner must include the right to control its content.

BTW, Leibling is also credited with the quote, “People everywhere confuse what they read in newspapers with news.”

  24. Roland_Melnick Says:

The freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights are to protect the citizenry against government. Suggesting we are criticizing those rights or the exercise of them is moronic.

  25. Jaeson Says:

Roland hits the nail right on the head.

Freedom of speech only protects an individual from the government coercion or punishment as a response to any given form of speech.

It in no way protects individuals from having their comments on a blog moderated, nor does it protect individuals, groups, or government from having their speech openly criticized.

Leftists would understand these things if they spent their time productively studying our nation’s founding documents, rather than wasting their time with snake oil nonsense like social justice.

  26. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Voter Fraud in a union? Say it ain’t so: http://www.jsonline.com/watchdog/noquarter/102743159.html

and is this statement good or what?
“Consider the comments of Rich Abelson, executive director of AFSCME’s District Council 48, the group that represents about 10,000 Milwaukee city and county employees. He wondered if Goulding was fessing up to the forgery incident only because she got caught.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Abelson said. “I find it difficult to believe this was the only one.”

Hell, he sounds like one of us.

  27. Roland_Melnick Says:

Thanks Jaeson. What you’re talking about also explains why a lot of Liberals/Progressives embrace guys like Hugo Chavez. They’d love to wield the power he does when he takes over radio stations and newspapers that criticize him. For example, a local defense attorney/uber-leftist blogger, Mike Plaisted, is a big fan of the FCC dictating content…particularly on AM radio.

  28. Jaeson Says:

You’re absolutely right. It’s one of the reason this whole concept of “hate speech” disturbs me.

I’m sure you’ll notice, that leftists love to label anything that runs contrary to their opinions as hate speech. Everything from Tea Party signage to Badger Blogger to Rush Limbaugh to FOX News.

They do this while simultaneously pursuing legislation prohibiting hate speech.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine that the two efforts are meant to work towards the same end at some point in the future.

  29. gus Says:

Jaeson, I don’t believe I’ve ever complimented you as directly as I should. Your commentary and the links you provide are awesome. You would be a ridiculously valuable asset to a Conservative campaign. You don’t BS and engage in the GOTCHA type of discussions that LIBS try to engender and ambush with. I admire your input here. I do.
I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND the LIB FREAK ANIMAL.
Once upon a time, I was a KIND Democrat. An early version of TOMMY CHOO CHOO BARRETT. I was NEVER a libfreak. I have a brother who is a libfreak. He is detached from reality and he is angry, and he has NEVER fully fit in, to a society that functions on MERIT and rewards those who SUCCEED in a Capitalist free market.
Cutting to the chase. LIBS will cheat you and criticize you when you RAISE YOUR VOICE, because they cheated you. Libs will LIE and criticize you for ACCUSING THEM.
It’s pretty much ALYNSKI, and I understand it.

And THAT is why I do not suffer fools like Johnny the Rascal, Folktunes the clown and Crap on, Crap off THE UNION…..CRAPPER….gladly.
Jaeson, they have ZERO intention of EVER being fair to you. And all 3 are from the land of MISFIT TOYS.
Lastly, guys like Zach W. are neophyte libbies. Zach EXPECTS respect, yet gives none. Much of the recent banter vis a vis Zach INVOLVED ME.
I used the term LIBTARD with VAST FREQUENCY here. I still do in other venues. Zach contacted B-B and it’s honest and kind blogger/moderators, and told them I WAS MEAN and it was INSENSITIVE to use that term.
ZACH ALYNSKI. Until recently, I did not know WHO and WHY I was asked NOT TO USE THAT TERM. But I complied out of RESPECT for Patrick, Bruce, Glenn and Roland. And even at that time, I FULLY REALIZED, that SOMEONE was ALYNSKI MANIPULATING Patricks blog.
    I was right.
