Chavez: “$200.00 per barrel oil if U.S. attacks Iran or Venezuela”

November 20th, 2007

Brothers in craziness

I think one could make the strong argument that these two represent as strong a threat to the survival of our planet as any disputed model of global climate change.

“Hugo Chavez also joked about the most serious issue the U.S. is confronting regarding Iran — nuclear weapons — during his get-together with Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Although it’s a sensitive issue for his ally, Chavez joked about acquiring his own atomic bombs, apparently seeking to poke fun at the U.S. accusation that Iran is using its nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons.

According to a Venezuelan state TV report, when a reporter asked about the aims of his visit, Chavez quipped: “As the imperialist press says, I came to look for an atomic bomb, and I’ve got it here. If anyone should cross me, I’ll fire it.”

The question is: What are we going to do about it.

I think this now officially qualifies as a “drumbeat”.

On the heels of a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece which talked up Lou Dobbs for president, CNN last night reported that Dobbs is currently attending “listening sessions” in Boston related to a potential presidential run as an independent candidate; also reporting that in an AOL Online poll, of those responding, Dobbs garnered 56% of the vote.

We’ll see if “The War on the Middle Class” is a message that has legs in the coming months, I guess. With Ron Paul out-polling Fred Thompson two-to-one in New Hampshire (and Romney pulling away from the pack), I wonder if folks are truly ready for another “unconventional” independent candidate.

Congratulations Keith!

Updated - Mader’s employees held hostage in bold morning heist

November 19th, 2007

Mader’s Restaurant, a Milwaukee dining institution, was robbed this morning. An armed suspect held employees in the freezer area at gunpoint, while the manager was ordered to open the safe. The suspects reportedly communicated with their getaway driver via a two-way radio. WTMJ-TV initially reported this story around noon:

Police Looking for men who robbed Mader’s

Follow up: FOX6 has video, with additional info and an interview with Victor Mader, at this link. Mader says that in “51 years of working there, today was the first time he had ever seen a gun”, and calls the incident “a fluke” in his interview with WITI-TV. The suspects reportedly fled with “a small amount of money”.

Milwaukee ranked as 36th most dangerous city

November 19th, 2007

Milwaukee has been ranked as 36th most dangerous city in America, this doesn’t surprise anyone, but thing will be better now that we are getting a new police chief, right?

Actually, Springfield, where incoming chief Ed Flynn is coming from, is ranked only 2 spots safer than Milwaukee, at #38… Interesting, huh?

No… Did my Alderman lie to us?

November 18th, 2007

About two weeks ago, my Alderman, Joe Davis took some heat when it was learned that instead of working on the most important legislation that our city faces each year, the budget, Ald. Davis was on a junket to South Africa, wrestling crocodiles instead of budget issues.

To deflect some of the heat he was getting, he apparently told some that while he was in South Africa, he went to the owners of Miller Brewery, South African Breweries to discuss the situation with the planned merger with Coors and fight to keep jobs in Milwaukee… Only someone forgot to remind the Alderman that some years ago, this merged company was purchased by another company and is now known as SABMiller… and it isn’t even in South Africa anymore, heck, they aren’t even on the same continent, they are based in London England.

So, did Alderman Davis forget that he made the extra stop in London, or did he lie to us? Don’t worry Alderman, I’m sure the majority of your constituents won’t bother to hold you responsible. Heck, we probably won’t have another option to vote for anyway, so feel free to continue treating us like fools, because clearly, most of us are…

Check the second item for more details: Tripping out

Updated: Alderman Joe Davis sends Badger Blogger letters which offer additional information on his recent trade mission to South Africa.

Sexual Predator placed without notification in Kenosha County

November 18th, 2007

Kenosha County has some explaining to do, it seems that a Chapter 980 Sexually Violent Person was released into the Kenosha County town of Somers (n/w corner of the city of Kenosha) and the Kenosha Sheriffs Department failed to notify people in the area that this sexual predator was released into their midst.

In 1995 DARCY W. POWELL was found guilty of

  • 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of Child, a class C felony, Wisconsin Statutes 948.02(2).
  • Incest with Child, a class C felony, Wisconsin Statutes 948.06(1).
  • 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of Child, a class B felony, Wisconsin Statutes 948.02(2).
  • Incest with Child, a class C felony, Wisconsin Statutes 948.06(1).

In 1999, Darcy Powell was declared a Sexually Violent Person under Wisconsin’s Chapter 980 Statute.

From the original police notification:

Mr. Powell targets victims both family members and Non-family members. Both male and female children and adolescents. Mr. Powell has been convicted of sexually assaulting his own relative but also has a history of fondling pre-pubescent females and male relatives and friends of family victims.

A local resident, Anne, has contacted some of us that have been fighting the fight against the release of Sexual predators, to say that they and their neighbors were never notified of the release of this predator into their neighborhood.

Powell moved into the home at 5415 16th Pl. in mid September, but it was not until Oct. 19th that she received an anonymous letter warning that their new neighbor was indeed the registered sexual predator… There was no word from any policing agency. As Anne said, “What is most appalling to me is that if it was not for the anonymous letter in the mail notifying us of his placement, my kids would probably still be outside riding their bikes and waving to him!” That’s a scary thought. Also in the neighborhood, there is a church, bus stop and of course, other children.

When Anne sought help from local law enforcement, the Sheriffs Department tried to pass the buck to the Parole & Probation Department and Kenosha police. Apparently, they seem to pass this to the Kenosha PD, because they were the agency to notify the residents at his last residence, but he was moved from there because “he was having problems” with children playing around his house and a school was being built two blocks away, which would draw even more kids. Another bit of scary information is that Powell wants to be able to go outside and do yard work unsupervised, even after the trouble at his previous home. As I understand it though, the Town of Somers should fall under the Kenosha Sheriffs Department, not the city PD.

Also, in her search for answers and help, Anne contacted the Community Correction Office, and apparently they flat out forgot that they work for the public, not the predator, and have become quite hostile towards this citizen that is trying to protect her children. This Community Corrections Officer refuses to help, in fact, she has called Anne and citizens looking for help in this matter, vigilantes and has threatened to “have the Sheriff’s Department have a talk with [Anne].” Personally, I would not only welcome a talk with the “sheriffs department,” I would be demanding to meet with the Sheriff David G. Beth to demand answers to why she and her neighbors were not informed that a registered Sexually Violent Person was allowed to move in without notification.

Anne has also been stonewalled by one of Powell’s state approved chaperons and religious mentor, Deacon Terry Maack of St. Peter Parish in Kenosha, who runs a prison ministry in Kenosha. Apparently, Deacon Maack also was involved in convincing the current property owner to rent to Powell. While I can respect Deacon Maack’s prison ministries, he needs to put the needs and fears of the potential victims and their families ahead of this violent predator. Maack has sent a letter to Anne and other neighbors, telling them that they are being unchristian… I wonder of Deacon Maack would trust this convicted pedophile to babysit for his grandchildren?

Wisconsin’s families deserve answers! How can a sexually violent predator like this be released into a neighborhood without the parents of children in the area being notified?

Will he open another can?

Can 'O Whoop-AssThe word is, when the Carolina Panthers take the field against our Beloved Packers, 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde will be at the helm, becoming the oldest player to start an NFL game.

Now we know that “our old man,” 38-year-old Brett Favre still has what it takes, as he is among the league leaders in all of the quarterback stats. Brett has put up over 300 yards per game in 6 of the last 7 weeks, and leads the NFL in passing yardage per game. I expect them to run the ball more today, but I wouldn’t be to surprised if Brett opens another can ‘o whoop-ass today!

Your thoughts on the game?

The Guardian Angels come to Milwaukee

November 17th, 2007

This afternoon, Alderman Tony Zielinski held a press conference with the new Spokesperson of the Milwaukee Chapter and several other members of the Guardian Angels. These Angels come from both Chicago and Green Bay, and they will be patrolling Milwaukee streets until Milwaukee’s volunteer force is fully trained (about 3 months) and ready to take to the streets.

If you would be interested in joining the Guardian Angels in Milwaukee, and are over 16 and have no felony convictions, you can give them a call at (414) 755-2907 or reach them through the main website GuardianAngels.org.

You can watch the full 15 minute press conference from 14th & Greenfield. This was done outside, so I apologize for the traffic noise, but it contains plenty of information, not just the 20 second sound bites you will see on the local news.

By the way, last night two people were shot about 6 blocks south of where this press conference was held.

Shots through door injure 2 victims
Two people were shot around 10:45 last night after gunmen chased one of them into a house on the 2000 block of S. 14th Street, Milwaukee police said this morning.

One of the victims, a 20-year-old man, said he saw the gunmen coming down the street and ran into the house of someone he knew. He slammed the door and the suspects fired between five and seven shots, hitting the 20-year-old in the back. A 38-year-old woman in the house was struck in the arm.

I’ll try not to read too much into this…

North Dakota couple finds 125 year old Milwaukee Daily Journal in their closet

November 17th, 2007

Wow. These people have something that, according to the story in today’s Journal/Sentinel, no one else in Milwaukee (not even the J/S’ own archives) has in their possession.

Of course, there’s the usual Journal content; an editorial advocating expanded public funding for the fledgling Washington Park Zoo, a piece by Whitney Gould decrying the urban sprawl and loss of open space around 1st & Keefe… but there’s something else this story helped me learn about the Milwaukee Daily Journal when it was founded in 1882.

The mission statement of the Daily Journal, published by founder Lucius W. Nieman (according to the J/S web archives) at the time of its founding, suggested that the Journal “will be the outspoken, independent organ of the people against all that is wrong”.

That is why they account for overnight homicides in “Regional News Briefs”. It’s all crystal clear to me now…

Deer Season

November 17th, 2007

Starting today, 650,000 gun toting, orange clad hunters will be invading Wisconsin’s beautiful woodlands in search of bambi’s daddy. Unfortunately, you will have to do it without me again this year, but if any of you bag your deer and want to brag a little, send it to me and I’ll be glad to post it here on the blog for all to see!

Wisconsin’s deer herd is very high again this year, and they are counting on you to cull the herd. This is a very important obligation that hunters have, with a deer population this high, many deer will starve in winter and car/deer crashes will also increase. So before any anti-hunting zealots and PETA types start, just move on, this isn’t the place for you, because venison is delicious!

If you want to talk about your hunt, feel free.

The Nannette Hegerty administration ends today

November 16th, 2007

Today marks Nannette Hegerty’s last day as Milwaukee’s police chief. It would be interesting to gain insight into Hegerty’s own assessment of her 4 years as chief; Milwaukeeans won’t have that luxury, as she’s chosen not to grant any interviews concerning her retirement.

In 4 years as chief, Hegerty dismissed 45 officers and 5 recruits. Many insiders report that department morale is at an unprecedented low, which, in light of conditions during the tenure of predecessors like Art Jones and Phil Arreola, speaks volumes.

While the results of her recent Neighborhood Summer Initiative were described as a “resounding success”, facts and figures which have emerged since, as discussed in both the blogosphere and the MSM, suggest the contrary.

Has Nan Hegerty established a “legacy” in her 4 years as chief? What will the passing of time dictate Hegerty’s “indelible mark” on Milwaukee to be?

Another one rolls on McGee

November 15th, 2007

The Alderthug has had another of his co-defendants (Little Al Stewart II) roll over and plead guilty, apparently taking a plea bargain the way Dimitrius Jackson did. And interestingly enough, Little Al Stewart II is the only one that has been out on bail this whole time.

McGee co-defendent seeks to change plea
The second of two co-defendants with jailed Ald. Mike McGee Jr. in the beating conspiracy case that led to the politician’s Memorial Day arrest requested Thursday a chance to change his not-guilty plea.

Little Al Stewart II, who like McGee and Dimitrius Jackson was charged in May with two felony counts of plotting the beating of a man, has been scheduled for a plea date Nov. 29. Up to the point of the request, Stewart, 52, has maintained a plea of not guilty. He has been out on $20,000 bail since June.

Court records indicate the request was by mutual request of Stewart and prosecutors, but no further information was available about the request.
