Someone’s going to have to ‘splain this one to me.
In a posting at his Milwaukee County First blog, and cross-posted at his personal blog, Milwaukee county employee and union representative Chris “capper” Liebenthal decries the use of a Milwaukee County Parks logo on an Americans for Prosperity banner displayed at last week’s taxpayer rally at Veteran’s Park. Liebenthal writes:
“The fact that the Parks logo appears on the banner could very well lead one to think that Milwaukee County endorsed and/or sponsored this event, which would not be legal…I have sent out emails of inquiry to County Executive Scott Walker, Parks Director Sue Black and to Americans for Prosperity to find out if the use of the logo was authorized and if so, who authorized it. If it was not authorized, it will be interesting to see what actions Milwaukee County will take to correct the misperception that someone from the County actually endorsed a political event such as this.”
Yet, when you open this copy of Milwaukee County First’s own promotional literature, what’s the first thing prominently displayed?
I suppose Liebenthal would make the argument that an organization that counts himself, Jason Haas and Zach Wisniewski as members isn’t a “political” organization.
Still, something seems amiss here. I just can’t quite put my finger on it…

It’s clear that the logo on the MCF brochure is being used as a heading rather than as a logo in and of itself.
It’s unclear why the Mil County Parks would allow their logo to be used on the AFP banner if not to show some level of support. The banner does not address the parks. It does not discuss the parks.
The uses are clearly different in nature. Does that excuse one or the other? I don’t know. Apples and oranges are alike enough if you’re discussing fruit but there ain’t nobody buying your caramel oranges.

Fred, I followed the link. The Parks Dept reply doesn’t really clear anything up. They didn’t ask for it to be posted and AFP idn’t ask them. The banner is clearly intended to make an impression that there is a level of connection.
The MCF brochure addresses issues relevant to the Parks Dept. It’s really not the same.

Beware these people, they are dirty as sin. Most of them work for government in some form and spend theyre days working about 2 hrs, and spending the rest of theyre taxpayer funded time working out little schemes to punk the right-wing blogosphere so that in theyre minds, they can claim mental superiority and feel better about how dorky and pathetic they are. do not play theyre game. I still don’t get the argument they are spinning here. They are alleging that either the AFP or one of their associated groups is using the logo to give people the impression that the Parks Dept. endorses them OR that the Parks Dept. actually did endorse the rally. SINCE WHEN DID AN ENDORSEMENT FROM THE FREAKIN’ PARKS DEPT. BECOME SO FREAKIN’ VALUABLE??? OMG, capper needs to step away from his computer and leave his mother’s basement every now and again for some fresh air and perspective.

Follow this. The parks department takes whatever opportunity available to promote itself.
That does not mean it endorses the political view of any group that hold a meeting within any park.
