With 96% of state precincts reporting, even the Journal/Sentinel can’t ignore the conclusion:
Mike Gableman has defeated Louis Butler for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Earlier in the evening, in the race for Milwaukee County Executive, Lena Taylor ended her truth-challenged campaign with an interestingly optimistic concession speech. She was handily beaten by Scott Walker 59% to 41%.
Well, at least she’s “proud to be a senator“. She can re-upload those baffling pictures to her MySpace now.
In a stunning turn of events that many pundits just, frankly, didn’t see coming, Wisconsin voters smelled the stench of hollow liberal hypocrisy and the big money of Lawyers, Lobbyists, Law Firms and Labor Unions and, in two very bitter and contentious battles, sent the ultra-liberals packing.
Congratulations to all winning candidates in local and statewide elections. The real congratulations go out to the voters, though, for knowing when to say “enough is enough”. Your votes yesterday reflect the fact that the other side just couldn’t present candidates you felt were worthy of your vote. Let’s hope, for Wisconsin’s sake, it’s the beginning of a trend.
In other more City of Milwaukee-specific developments, Michael McGee, Jr. is now just another guy in an orange jumpsuit. It’s too bad he doesn’t have to give 9 months of his city paychecks and car allowances back, but the taxpayers share the joy in Milwaukee’s 6th District’s vote for change. It’s nice to know we won’t have to see another national dateline out of Milwaukee where McGee is concerned.
Jill Didier, an underfunded conservative candidate whose opponent had three times more money in his campaign war chest, replaces outgoing McGee-hugging Wauwatosa Mayor Theresa Estness. Turnout in the Wauwatosa race was placed at 42%. In some communities, out-of-control property taxes are apparently still a pretty powerful motivator. It sounds like Wauwatosa residents won big yesterday, on both the city and county levels.
Step aside from the common council and county board races in which the incumbents won just about every election, and for the most part, it was a good day for the anti-tax-and-spend, anti-activism-from-the-bench crowd. Baby steps, folks. Baby steps.
The quote of the day — no, maybe the week — NO, maybe the MONTH — pours forth from a remarkably unlikely source.
Frequent blog commenter “Roasted Peanuts“, upon assessing the day’s events, offers the following take on the situation:
–
3:45 AM April 2nd, 2008
Roasted Peanuts Says:
Barrett with 71%. Eat it ladies. You chumps can’t touch this.
–
The textbook definition of “the power of positive thinking”, I guess.
Yeah Peanuts, we’re all a bunch of chumps. Very, very happy chumps. Some of us, say, filled with a “10 year long” kind of happiness.

I am very happy today. We didn’t sweep ‘em, but we did pretty darn good!
I see that Loophole Louie is still looking for a loophole and hasn’t done the classy thing and conceded…
Did you see Milwaukee’s 1st Supervisory? A new comer whooped the entrenched incumbent in a write-in candidacy!
Dan Wycklendt came less than 200 votes from defeating the RINO Lynne Debruin
Pedro Colon got sent packin’, big time!
Conservatism won out in Wauwatosa, congratulations Mayor Didier!
I have to run, so I haven’t been able to dig into the school referendums yet, but I hear that some voters decided that their taxes weren’t high enough yet…

Good news for Milwaukee! Like you said…Baby steps!

What a night. Feels a heck of a lot better than Nov. 2006, that’s for sure.
Pretty much everything (or everyone) I voted for won. Yippee!
We’ll take Barrett – he’s harmless and often MIA anyway. Give me Walker and Gableman and a dead Frankenstein veto and I’m a happy camper.

“Eat it ladies”? Interesting comment coming from a lib. Would that be considered “insidious sexism”? RP, I’m surprised at you.

Let me preface my comments by stating I don’t particularly like Tom Barrett, but he seems like a stable presence in city politics. Langley has been around a long time but Colon seemed like he wanted to take the city attorney’s office in the wrong direction.
I’m happy McGee lost. I don’t like Scott Walker but I suppose I can live with the fact that the courthouse is improperly funded and funding for law enforcement sucks. I get to complain about it that much more, though.
I am not happy Gableman won. Not only because I am a Democrat…not by a long shot. Had a qualified person run against Butler I would have gladly voted for him. I am not happy because of the ads…and yes, I know they were third party. They misrepresented both candidates and I am greatly disturbed that they influenced as many votes as they did. I don’t like dirty campaigning on either side. I felt Gableman’s ads were dirtier, so I voted AGAINST him as opposed to against Butler.
Gableman will have to prove his competence with his opinions, insight, and written decisions while on the WISC. If he proves to be less than competent, I assume that everyone here on this board will be clamoring for another, more qualified candidate during the next election cycle.
On a final note, congrats to Rebecca Dallet. I was very happy to see her win convincingly last night.

I actually sort of agree with anonymousinsider (there I said it, I still cant BELIEVE I said it. But I said it.)
I am glad the Elections are over. I was getting really sick of the negative campaign ads.
I don’t know that the 3rd party ads necessarily influenced people to vote one way or another, as is claimed but thats another issue for another day.

Michael,
I’m touched by your honesty.
Just wait until November, though. That’s when the mud really starts to fly.
Gets me depressed just thinking about it.

“Eat it ladies”? A very revealing statement about the inner workings of a liberal mind. Especially when it was about Barrett winning as was expected.
I think the Taylor supporters ought to organize volunteer weekend county park cleanup crews in protest.
i.e. Make lemonade…

I hear they were eating Roasted Peanuts at Scott’s victory party last night.
And Lena Taylor’s party was eating SOUR GRAPES.

I didn’t read “Eat it ladies” as anti-woman as much as anti-gay. Either way, a lovely example of the contempt liberals have for the groups they claim to champion.

Negative ads aside I for one am GLAD that Butler was defeated. Over the last few years the SC has been beating on Law Enforcement with their rulings. Even worse, Police Unions that seem to have forgotten these rulings and supported a candidate who sided with these rulings.

I wonder what the election would have looked liked if Gableman had better ads run for him????? Everyone looked down at those ads and it made it hard for people to get behind him. If not for the poor TV spots he might have won by another 5%

I’m glad that Gableman ran the negative ads. If he didn’t, the public would have seen Butlers ads and thought that he was really tough on crime. Butler is an Aging Hippy Liberal Douche and needed to be called out. He has always done his part to screw over the victims and reward the shit bags.
Bravo Justice Gableman!

Yesterday was a good day for some good people. Has renewed some of my lost faith in Milwaukee, and Wisconsin’s, voters.
RP’s comments are totally unsurprising.
As for the the ads (from both sides) in the Supreme Court race, I can’t stand it when anonymous groups put out these ads. You see them on TV and never does the voice-over say who is sponsoring the ad. Sometimes they will flash the sponsor at the bottom of the screen in [very] fine print. But my recollection of those ads is that they were pretty much anonymous, from both sides. Not to mention both sides put out ads that contained lies.

I could not be happier that that Butler has lost, he was useless as city judge, also when he was a judge at childrens court and in my opinion he did more damage then he did good when he was put on the supreme court.
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Aloha Spicoli!
Butler is the ultimate douche, now he is calling for reform in the way campaign advertising is run. He was exposed as the pantywaist that he is, and now he is angry. He never should have been a municipal court judge. The MPA should be ashamed for endorsing him. Sorry Louie, you won’t be legislating from the bench anymore! By the way, nice job with the new identification procedure.

Let me be the first to offer Roasted Peanuts a Tea Bag, I mean a tea cup to celebrate the big victory

Butler may be gone, but it’s Doyle who is the real problem. Until this is rectified Wisconsinites will have a liar, and a thief at the helm.
