While BadgerBlogger can not independently confirm this, sources close to the Milwaukee Brewers organization tell BadgerBlogger late this evening, in the midst of another horrid road trip, and on the heels of a sweep by the Boston Red Sox, that Brewers manager Ned Yost will be relieved of his duties during the team’s off day Monday, and replaced on an “interim” basis by team bench coach Ted Simmons.

Many baseball insiders routinely refer to Simmons as one of the “best minds in baseball“; perhaps his new role will provide the direction and leadership this team has been so badly lacking.

  1. Dean Says:

Unless, of course, Ted is behind some of the decisions made so far. I don’t think so, but still….

  2. Pete Fanning Says:

He could always go back to the Childress team and work as a “rehydration engineer” :)

  3. cauleys Says:

Nice try, but I don’t think Nedley will be fired quite yet.

  4. anonymousinsider Says:

Dare I hope that this be true? I’d love to blame Scott Walker for the Brewers’ woes, but this is all on Yost. ;)

Will Simmons give all the players new nicknames that don’t end in “ie”? Inquiring minds want to know.

  5. steveegg Says:

The Journal Sentinel brain trust says, “Not yet.” Tom Hauridcourt does allow for the possibility however based on Ryan Braun’s post-game comments.

  6. Jordy Nelson Says:

Good god, another ’82 Brewer! Drop dead already.

  7. Judomaster Says:

Hocus Pocus…Thanks for the yellow journalism. Are there WOMBATS attacking WAUKEGAN? or ELVIS seen walking on WATER STREET???

  8. ross Says:

“Journal Sentinel brain trust” Thanks for the laugh steveegg. They are getting beaten on news stories left and right all the time. 1250 WSSP gets the news out before they do regularly.

  9. John Says:

Quote of the day — “…’Badger Blogger,’ whatever that is.”

Pray tell in a few years, we can say “Journal-Sentinel, whatever that was.”

  10. steveegg Says:

Third-hand hearsay – WSSP is reporting that the Brewrs will hold a 4 pm press conference to announce the firing of Yost.

  11. Bruce Says:

I’m not sure that’s accurate, I saw that someone posted that at Haudricourt’s blog, but there were others over there who claim to have been listening to WSSP and had heard no such announcement.

4:00 PM would be an odd time for any sports organization to schedule a news conference. That’s cutting into cocktail hour on the east coast.

As I stated at Haudricourt’s blog, the light of the new day has brought no further clarity to this situation.

I’m astonished by how many people over there discount a blogger’s ability to have any contacts. It’s a pretty small world you know, folks.

  12. badgerblogger sucks Says:

This is the dumbest thing I have seen. If you don’t have a reliable source, don’t put stuff like this on the internet. If you have a reliable source, name them so you don’t look like a moron. I think this was a media stunt by this website so people would start coming here. It worked I guess, I came just so I could read this nonsense and talk shit about how dumb it is.

O by the way, 1250 WSSP sucks too, they don’t release any “breaking news”. All their news comes from ESPN.com, JSonline, and Foxsports.com. Every time I hear their sports update, it is all everything I’ve read on one of those websites

  13. Jacob Says:

Bruce, you say you are surprised that people discount your ability to have contacts near the brewers organization.

So, do you have contacts within the brewers organization? Judging from your original wording you do not. Do you have sources “close” to the brewers organization? Have they ever provided you with information that turned out to be true?

Without answering those questions, I assume you are attention-mongering. It’s a good move too to use sports. Will you lose much credibility in the political realm because of this? Did you target Haudricourt directly for the mention? How upset are you that he quoted you without providing a link?

  14. Jacob Says:

A quick search of your site shows no brewer’s scoops and a penchant for anti-yost posts.

  21. Bruce Says:

I am concerned that people are using this to attack the credibility of BadgerBlogger. While we are new to some of you by virtue of today’s attention, we’re hardly new to this “blogging” thing… ;) We’ve been at this for a while.

We are not attention whores. Anyone who has frequented this blog for any length of time knows that.

News stories don’t always play out according to an exact time line. I have a source. The source told me something was going to happen today. That hasn’t happened – yet. Let it play out.

I took great care to offer the caveat in my posting that I hadn’t been able to check my math forward and reverse, as it was late on a Sunday night.

This person has always provided reliable information in the past, on issues related to sports and otherwise. I still believe that their information is accurate.

I’m rather astonished at the level of attention this has gotten since Tom Haudricourt posted it on his blog at 4:57 this morning. I’m guessing that Tom (and other members of the local media) also smell something coming down the pike, maybe today, maybe not… but certainly sooner, rather than later.

Jacob, people quote us all the time without providing links back to the site. We’re used to it. It’s why we have full-time jobs to provide a much-needed distraction.

  22. Yawn Says:

“This person has always provided reliable information in the past, on issues related to sports and otherwise.”

Can you point us to these other sports entries on this blogsite where this source provided you with the information as you claim?

  23. Jacob Says:

    Bruce, nice reply.

Your credibility and motives should be attacked and questioned should this turn out to be false information, right?

I’m surprised that you are taken aback by the “level of attention” this has gotten. You wrote that the brewers manager was going to be fired today. That’s a once every few years event, that’s big news.

Actually, getting more attention than your post is the debate over whether or not Mr. Haudricourt should have “picked” this up at all.

I hope you guys are right just for the whole blog versus corporate journalism debate. But you don’t get an infinite amount of time to be vindicated.

  24. TosaDan Says:

Whats the big deal. Bruce took a risk with his source. If it was wrong it was wrong. If it was right then good for him. This is much to do about nothing in my opinion.

This blog has much more value then its ability to bring MLB rumors to the internet. Bruce took a chance, sometimes they work out sometimes they don’t Big deal.

  25. Pete Fanning Says:

Jacob, what part of “While BadgerBlogger can not independently confirm this” do you not understand?

  26. Jacob Says:

Pete, what is your comment an objection to?

  27. Pete Fanning Says:

“Your credibility and motives should be attacked and questioned should this turn out to be false information, right?”

That’s what I’m objecting to…..while I cannot speak for Bruce or Patrick, I do know this isn’t something posted on a whim or fantasy. They had a source, a believable source. Bruce QUALIFIED the information by saying “BadgerBlogger can not independently confirm this”.

To me, he went to great pains and I’m satisfied.

  28. KT Says:

Bruce, Patrick… As a regular reader, I love this. If you do scoop this, it is just another story that I read about on this blog first. You have scooped the so called “news outlets” SOOOO many times it is laughable.

I do think it is is funny that for this story you are getting a mention by name and web address, that is not something they have done before when you have broken a story.

    Lovin’ it!!!

  29. BlueHoudini Says:

Jacob, before you attack Bruce’s credibility, you should know Bruce has been on the money on a number of topics, like the Milwaukee and Madison Police Departments, local politics, etc.

Furthermore, Ned Yost is a dud. As the payroll and talent level have improved, the team is moving backwards.

There are only five players on the entire team (Braun, Hart, Kapler, Kendall and Shouse) who are playing up to par.

Several young players, Rickie Weeks to name one, has a AA glove and a AAA batting average.

Yost is a so-called “players manager.” The team needs a real manager, one who will lead and hold players accountable for their very, very sub-par performances.

Having played the game at various levels, it is easy to point out the flaws with a number of players.
Bill Hall needs to close up his stance so he can see pitches on the outside corner. J.J. Hardy tries to pull the ball, and needs to go the other way. Carlos “Belt High” Villenueva has to get his flame throwing 88 mile fast ball down and to a spot.

So why haven’t these problems been corrected? If the players won’t respond to coaching, then Yost needs to get together with Melvin and move them on. The coaches need to light a fire under these guys butts. Yost is more interested in being pals with the players. The team needs a Mike Ditka personality.

  30. Jacob Says:

BlueHoudini, I did not attack Bruce’s credibility. I just pointed out that if he is making up rumours his credibility should be attacked. Do you disagree with that?

  31. Bruce Says:

Calm down, nobody’s “making up rumors”.

Perhaps the timing or logistics have changed since yesterday, but it’s apparent to me that something major is forthcoming.

  32. TosaDan Says:

Even if the Brewers fire Yost sometime this week I would consider this story as “broke” by Badger Blogger.

  33. Jacob Says:

Pete, you are saying if the information turns out to be false that Bruce’s and the blog’s reputation go unscathed. Same result as if they are making up rumours? That seems to be in the opposite spirit of a self-proclaimed media watchdog.

I wonder, do the blog others agree with Pete, that distribution of false information should carry no penalty.

Bruce, relax, I did not accuse you of making up rumours. I am only speaking in hypotheticals. For all I know you are honest, have a source, and your source has reliable information. The only way to judge that though is on the results.

  34. Yawn Says:

    TosaDan Says:

Even if the Brewers fire Yost sometime this week I would consider this story as “broke” by Badger Blogger.

Why is that TosaDan? There have been predictions of Yost’s demise all season, especially since the first five game losing streak. This blog is just jumping on the bandwagon. And adding a “source” to make people think there is some credibility here. There isn’t.

  35. blogs < truth Says:

Just another wanna-be-a-big-web-star blogger trying to cash in on a rumor that has been flying around for weeks, in hopes of jumping on the “heard-it-here-first” bandwagon… you’re looking for a goldmine on somebody else’s property here. Since when is speculation a close, credible source? Hmmmph… bloggers…

  36. TosaDan Says:

It makes a lot of sense for a Yost firing.

    -Brewers are in last place
-Just got swept again on the road
    -Day off for the Crew
    -A change is needed
-Simmons was hired and was quickly placed in a position to make high level decisions with the team

Well see, I think this has some legs and as I stated previous I think it maybe premature but it sure wouldn’t surprise me if it happens this week.

  37. TosaDan Says:

my 5th point should say put into a position to provide input for high level decisions with the team. Not make

  40. Al Says:

  41. Yost Hater Says:

I want Yost gone as much as any Brewer fan, but whenthe GM is in NAshville and the team is in Pittsburgh, it’s NOT going to happen. You better check this great source of yours.

And if it does happen this week, this blog didn;t break any story. Many have been calling for his head for weeks – myself for 2 years, and another guy has a website. Get in line.

  42. Miguel53005 Says:

Was your source a beer vendor or a peanut vendor?

I hope it was the beer vendor, because a reliable source told me that the peanut vendors at Miller Park are not as well connected to Doug Melvin, although I can not independently confirm this.

  43. treego Says:

Either Badger Blogger is lying, or Doug Melvin is lying: http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/05/19/melvin-has-no-problem-with-braun-s-comments.aspx

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is embarrassed to have even given this blog some credibility right now.

  44. jmac Says:

    melvin strikes back!!!

Melvin was aware that a blogger had posted a supposed news scoop late Sunday night claiming he had a source that told him the Brewers were going to fire Yost today. And Melvin said any radio station or TV station or newspaper that responded to a blog site as a news source — and that includes me because I did so today — should seriously question themselves.

“I have too much respect for newspapers and news stations for them to respond to a blog for their news,” said Melvin. “When they do so, they lose their credibility. I refuse to respond to blogs because anybody can put anything out there.”

I agree with Melvin whole-heartedly, and it’s one of the main problems I have with blogs and responding to blogs. Badger Blogger put it out there that Yost would be fired today and there was no validity to it. Melvin is in Nashville. Yost is in Pittsburgh. Attanasio is back home in LA. You don’t fire your manager when all of the decision-makers are scattered across the country. You circle the wagons at times like that.

Shame on Badger Blogger — and you can bet I’ll never cite anything from that “source” again — and shame on me for giving them their 15 minutes of fame.

  45. DelafieldJeff Says:

This was obviously a ploy to get people to this stupid blogging site. Anyone can predict Yost being fired AT SOME POINT. I predict RIGHT NOW that sometime in the near future Yost will be gone.

DUH, obviously you’re a joke and so is your “source”. Is your source the same guy that’s always after the lucky charms?

    Moron.

  46. anonymousinsider Says:

This thing is blowing up sports radio. The funny thing is, most folks think that the JS was wrong to print it.

I agree…I mean, aside from the loyal nutjobs like me who visit this site on a regular basis, who comes here for Brewers news? :)

I think we all know Bruce and Patrick well enough to know that they qualify their scoops and edit posts and information written on this site VERY EFFECTIVELY, and often go beyond what they are required to do.

  47. jrm462 Says:

Go Bruce and keep up the good work. People like AL were just waiting in the weeds for a chance to attack this blog. They are afraid of it; it scares them that a blog can break stories before the main stream media. AL, this blog has been the number one blog in Wisconsin for a while, so I doubt he was just trying to attract viewers like you. Bruce has been reliable in the past and wouldn’t make something like this up. That’s why he put Badger Blogger was unable to confirm this. Do you get this upset when the Journal intentionally prints lies or just makes up stories?

  48. Joel Says:

So let me get this straight: random guy with the “#1 blog in Wisconsin” makes a not altogether outrageous claim that cannot be verified and hasn’t one iota of evidence behind it, and people (“MSM” and bloggers alike) act like it’s news? Forgive the cynicism that this wasn’t a ploy to either 1. look like you know what you’re talking about, or 2. drive up hits.

    Embarassing.

  49. JP Says:

Really? People like Al (and myself) were waiting for this story to fall through and guess what, it did. Honestly, this faux-journalism prevents other blogs from achieving real respectability. News flash from the guy who makes the Secret Stadium Sauce…no one is scared of a few bloggers pretending to have journalistic standards. I mean, he would apparently know about the same as Bruce’s “source”.

You can’t just move the bar and say that this broke the story. Given the team’s current state, it’s LIKELY that Yost gets fired. Since it was an off-day, you picked today and it didn’t work out. If he gets fired on Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun, or even next Monday, it’s too late to take credit. It’s like I say it’ll rain tonight. Well, maybe it rains tomorrow, or the next day, or the next…I can’t claim to predict the weather because I once said it would rain.

You people continue to say things like that’s why we were “unable to confirm this”? Look, until you prove that this “source” is reliable (as in what s/he said would happen, actually does), expect that it’ll get questioned when it doesn’t pan out. Your credibility has suffered and you’re the ones who feel entitled to attack those questioning your motives. Instead of attacking them, maybe offer an apology to readers for YOUR error.

Also, you mention the JS fabricated a story. The burden of proof is upon you. Where, when, and how? Prove it. Just like you need to prove this story isn’t a fabrication.

  50. Russ Gibson Says:

I say he will be fired after the 10 day road trip is ove and they dont win 3 or 4 of the next 7 games. If they win 3 they would be 3-13 on their last two away trips. not to mention only 4 – 3 last home stand.

  51. prosqtor Says:

    Who’s Tom Hardicourt? ;)

  52. Gracelynn Says:

You know what everyone problem is: They read a headline and not the story. It was told but not confirmed. So everyone comes on to bash the site for Brewers news. My answer to you is take a week read the stories and see what an amazing amount of work Patrick, Bruce and Glenn put into the site.
I applaud these men for sharing information they have and allways being honest. I wish I could write and devote the amount of time they put into this site.
Also Melvin hit the nose on the head. If the JS is coming here for news what kind of reporter do they have? I will be nice and not write what I am thinking…

  53. Steve G Says:

Calculated guess Bruce, and it didn’t work out. Could’ve bumped you up to the mainstream if it did, but now you need to hope that it happens soon so you can glom on, or they turn it around so nobody cares about this anymore. Either way…. WHOOPS!

  54. Bay View Brewer Says:

After reading the comments here, I just wanted to mention a couple things:

    1. Haudricourt knew Yost was pretty unlikely to be fired today, and my guess is an editor or someone at the J/S told him to look into the post from this site. Again, just my guess, but I bet he, like many mainstream reporters, was pissed off that he had to take the time to “professionally” debunk something he knew was almost certainly untrue.

    2. Haudricourt really, really fanned the flames with just a shameful level of snark in his blog posts today. His condescending, ignorant references to this site were, I don’t know, some kind of just embarrassing effort to pump up his own credibility in his mind or defend newspapers or something. The follow-up post with Melvin where they wax each other’s cars about how much “respect” they have for the institution of mainstream media or whatever … I mean, good gawd, that was just ridiculous.

    3. Deadspin, of course, never pours water on an Internet fire by giving something its attention. Deadspin did nothing wrong, but still, that heaps more attention on it.

    4. In the end, though, Yost hasn’t been fired. I don’t know what anybody’s motives are behind this site, so I won’t guess. Still, the Yost firing story was noted, had some heavy qualifiers on it, readers were cautioned to take it for what it’s worth … and it ended up wrong. Anyway, no big deal in the end.

Haudricourt’s responses today, though, just an almost Buzz Bissinger-equivalent level of disdain and craziness from a mainstream guy.

  55. Zach W. Says:

No offense to Bruce, but even if Yost’s firing does come to pass, it was hardly a “scoop.” It’s not hard to see that Yost is on the hot seat.

  56. Greyhound Says:

I’ve been checking JSOnline daily for a few weeks waiting for news of Ned’s firing. Thanks for the false lead, jerkstore.

  57. Seth Says:

Bruce, don’t let these sports nuts get you down. People read blogs because they see things the MSM won’t print. How many “rumors” turned out to be factual were actually posted on blogs first. MANY!

By the way, jmac, three bosses don’t need to be in the same place to fire someone. Have you ever heard of the telephone or tele-conferencing? For all you know, Yost is on his way to Nashville right now.

Amazing to me is Yost hasn’t yet been fired! Is the team afraid to can him because they would have to pay Yost for the rest of the year?

  58. Joel Says:

Yes, Haurdricort (who I’m hardly a fan of) “refuses” to print the news of the imminent firing of Yost.

Get off the grassy knoll, dudes.

  59. jack Says:

the only bigger losers than bloggers are the people who get their news from them. “oh boy, i get to pretend to be a journalist even though i don’t have the skills or intelligence or education needed, which really isn’t that much. i suck.” “oh boy, i think i’ll get my information from them because i am a paranoid spaz.”

  60. Doug Melvin Says:

    I didn’t fire Yost.

  61. Ryan Says:

All you people who are visiting badgerblogger for the first time and are slinging mud are over-emotional, ignorant sheep.

If you actually took time to look at the history of this blog and not just lap up every bumbling condemnation from Tom H(who is obviously clueless about local political blogs) you would see that it is highly visited and has a very loyal base.

I would say it is the brewerfan.net (which I’m a member of) of conservative southeastern Wisconsin blogs. That is how dedicated the guys are who run this site. They are correct more often than not and only periodically delve into sports topics.

While this doesn’t seem like that big of a “scoop” to me even if it does turn out right since everyone assumes Ned will be fired soon, they actually have been correct on “scoops” that have a bigger effect on your lives (if you’re from around here) than anything sports related ever will.

  62. Alabama Badger Says:

The day is almost over…Please fire him already!

  63. Al Says:

    Gracelynn:

I DID read the whole “story”. He prints something but gives himself an out with “we haven’t independently confirmed this.”

Fact is, his “source” is an usher at Miller Park. He has no sources. He thought he’d throw something out there, hoped it would stick, then could move onto mainstream media.

It was a made up story. Ridiculous for anyone to defend him.

  64. Joel Says:

The day has come and gone and so has the credibility of the “#1 conservative political blog in SE Wisconsin.”

What unsubstantiated-but-likely-to-happen story would you like to post today in hopes of claiming a “scoop”?

  65. Patrick Says:

Yes, a post made here on good faith was proven to be wrong, some times sources are mistaken for what ever reason, but this is not something specific to blogs, it happens to news sources too. In fact, Michael Mathias has an outstanding post which includes a similar embarrassing mistake made by the same Journal Sentinel sports writer that has been our harshest critic.

Let me make this clear, we do deserve criticism, we aren’t blocking critical comments, we’re taking our lumps, and as always, we will strive to always do better.

Those that claim this was some sort of stunt to get hits, that’s ridiculous, who in their right mind would trade their credibility for a day or two spike in traffic? I realize that most of the harshest comments we are getting come from people that have never been here before, so you don’t know about the history of this blog. We have broken stories, been cited in the same paper that this story blew up in, numerous TV and radio stories have had their start here, so clearly our credibility is not something we take lightly. That being said, a mistake was made, but the writers of this blog are certainly not claiming perfection, all we can promise of that we do our honest best to be as accurate as possible.

  66. Jim Says:

We can only hope the Brewers go in a different direction. I think Yost is always a couple batters late to replace a pitcher. Worse yet, no one is warming up! But, my biggest problem with him is he decides to sit three of his best players for the same game! Then they are all rested up for the next game. Kind of reminds you of Pete Rose. Doesn’t it?
