State Sen. Jim Sullivan seems to have forgotten to renew his law license. Sullivan is still a practicing attorney, but it he sent in his renewal paperwork in late, allowing the license to lapse. And as of today, he still hasn’t filed to be reinstated. Dan Bice has all of the embarrassing details.
On the other Sullivan front, Mark Belling brought us the story of State Sen. Jim Sullivan bullying a high school student that did a project on vote fraud in Wisconsin. Since Sullivan is one of those that keep killing off any chance we have of reforming our fraud filled voting process, this is very interesting, because even this high school girl was able to school Sullivan on the issue. other students were intimidated by him, but she stood her ground. You can listen to Belling’s report here.

What a jerk. Reminds me of my State Senator, Bob Wirch, when he HUNG UP ON ME while discussing the Voter ID amendment.

I never would have thought it would have taken 3 business days for mail to get from Milwaukee to Madison. I guess we all should mail early on Memorial Day Weekend.

Oh, and patrick, if you read the article you link it says he mailed his paperwork but it got to Madison one day late due to Memorial Day Weekend. Your first sentence is inaccurate.

Typical liberal reaction. Berate/Badger a young person on the assumption they will submit to your idiocy. The entire educational system is based on this premise. No independent thought. Cudos to this young person for not submitting to this idiot. She will make a great citizen when she gets older.

Not so fast. Here we are on June 8th, and it’s still not reinstated. As the State Bar says, they don’t take long to reinstate people once the paperwork’s in — it’s been 9 business days, 8 since they received it.
Plus, he received notice in February (4 months ago) that his CLEs were due in January — that got him an extension. It was this final deadline he missed.
It’s not hard to get CLEs taken care of — the Wisconsin Bar sends out some junk mail almost every day on CLEs that are being held, and you can get them for 3 lawyers sitting for an hour discussing legal issues, if those lawyers create an outline and submit it to the Bar.

Where was the principal and teacher here? They should have grabbed Sullivan by the collar and the belt and thrown him out the front door.
Actually, Sullivan ought to get a one way trip to Zimbabwe.

prosqtor- It is only 8 days. It is not his full time job (he only has 2 minor cases with no court days in the near future), and not critical to scramble and correct like it would be for an ADA.
My motorcycle license expired in April. I have not sent in the renewal notice because I have been having battery problems and it is not a priority to me until I fix that problem. Once the battery is replaced I will quickly go and get it renewed. Same principle in Sullivan’s case.

John,
The point of prosqtor’s comment is that you get reminders for these things before the December prior to the year you are supposed to report. You have several months to respond, then you get deadline after deadline after deadline extended. Would you say the same thing about someone who “forgot” to pay their bar dues?
I’m a Dem who supports Sullivan but it is NOT that hard to fill out a CLE form in a timely manner.

Part time job or no, Sullivan has a duty to all of his clients to provide legal representation. No CLEs = No law license = No representation.
I hope he’s written letters to his clients explaining that he can’t do anything on their case(s) while he straightens this out.
And, he’s still listed as of the time of this post as suspended:

“due to the Memorial Day Weekend”???????
No. Because Sullivan didn’t get it there on time. It wasn’t late because of Memorial Day. It was late because Sullivan got it there late.
Sullivan gets paid for Memorial Day. He is accutely aware of the holiday. He is responsible to get his “paperwork” in on time.
Typical of a Democrat to make excuses for his own failures.

9:33a.m. — still listed as suspended.
The paperwork must’ve been misplaced somewhere between the mailbox and offices at the Bar.

Dude, as long as he gets it done before he has to be in court again, who cares? Maybe you should focus your energy on something else.
June 11th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
What are you, his buddy or something?
As to “who cares?” — see post 9. We should all care, or he should quit being a lawyer.

Those of us who pay our bar dues out of our own pockets and get our CLE’s reported in a timely manner care. People who are denied access to justice care. The State Bar cares, or they would not have these requirements.
Anyone who gets suspended for failing to submit CLE’s isn’t a particularly well organized person, and that says a lot about their ability to competently practice law.
