“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

Wisconsin Winner & Loser of the week

by @ 7:49 am. Filed under Home, Wi. Winner & Loser

Weekly Feature

Another installment of the weekly feature, “Wisconsin’s Winner & Loser of the Week”. I will select from the news of the past week, the best and worst of the news makers from Wisconsin.

I must admit that this week I have not covered local events as closely as the depressing national news of Terri Schiavo and Pope John Paul II, but I have not been ignoring local news.

Winner: Owen, from Boots & Sabers - Owen broke a story that got Milwaukee County governments attention this week. He posted a picture of a county owned vehicle driving through the streets of an Illinois town on Easter Sunday. Within hours of posting this image, County Executive Scott Walker started the process to get to the bottom of the story. The result can be seen at Boots & Sabers, but I will summarize by saying that this was a victory for The Alternative Media! Congratulation Owen, you did good buddy!

Honorable Mention - Kudos go out to Tim Carpenter and the other state legislators that have been fighting to repeal the April Fools Day tax hike.

Loser: Governor Jim Doyle - Jim Doyle has introduced a plan that he says will fight vote fraud, but if you look at the plan, it does nothing. There is little in there that can really be said is bad, it’s just that there is nothing good either. No requirement for a photo ID and no restrictions on same day registration. These are what is needed to fight fraud, but they are not addressed, he talks about more training for poll workers and deputy registrars…Sounds good, but does nothing. He also wants to expand “early voting”, this is not a good thing as this system is the easiest to cheat with. This is a lame plan Doyle, we need real reform!

Dishonorable Mention - I have to point out that the Republican leadership in Wisconsin’s legislature has been blocking the efforts to repeal the latest un-voted-for gas tax hike…Shameful!

Wisconsin’s Winner & Loser of the Week

by @ 1:00 pm. Filed under Home, Wisconsin, Wi. Winner & Loser

New Weekly Feature

I am starting a new weekly feature, “Wisconsin’s Winner & Loser of the Week”. I will select from the news of the past week, the best and worst of the news makers from Wisconsin.

This past week has been a busy news cycle, but this weeks Winner and Looser are:

Winner: West Allis police officer Ricky Orlowski Jr. — Officer Orlowski is the cop with the great police instincts that felt something was wrong when he noticed a man sitting in a van. It turned out that this “routine traffic stop” was the man that murdered the husband and mother of a Federal Judge in Chicago. The day before, he was seen wandering around the Federal Court House in Milwaukee and he had the names and addresses of two Federal Judges based in Milwaukee. Officer Orlowski’s instincts may have prevented the murders of more people. You can listen to the officer’s interview with Jeff Wagner here.

Thank you West Allis police officer Ricky Orlowski Jr.

Loser: The Milwaukee County Board — Supervisor John Weishan and four other members of the committee that voted 5-2 to attempt to blackmail Clear Channel Communications and force the firing of radio host Mark Belling for a comment he made almost 5 months ago. Even after Belling apologized many times, was suspended for a week and Clear Channel has given huge amounts of PSA time and even a radio show aimed at the Latino community, this group of County Board Members is still using this episode as cover to silence the voice of one of their most influential critics. It is clear that Belling is being targeted for his views, not the single word he uttered months ago because these same people remain silent about the frequent blatant hate filled and racist speech coming from Michael McGee Sr. and his son, a sitting Alderman in Milwaukee that also unapologetically continues to use derogatory speech and comments aimed at homosexuals and even African American women that work for the mayor.

Milwaukee County Board members that support this extortion effort, you are the Looser of the Week!
