JS Online:County, MPS in bus spat

by @ 6:05 am. Filed under Home, Metro Milwaukee, Schools / Education

Someone tell me why the Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools is concerned about the County Transit System losing money, his job is doing what is right for MPS.

JS Online:County, MPS in bus spat
Additional Milwaukee County bus fare increases or service cuts - which are almost certain to be considered, according to County Executive Scott Walker - could force Milwaukee Public Schools to pull its students off the buses at a cost of $6.6 million to the transit system, MPS Superintendent William Andrekopoulos warned Monday.

The transit system “may soon be uncompetitive with yellow bus service providers, and the school district will be forced to take its $6.6 million elsewhere,” Andrekopoulos writes in a letter to the editor in today’s Journal Sentinel. “This will only further contribute to the transit system’s decline, but our district just doesn’t have an option. We must put as many resources as possible into the classroom - the most important place.”

After reading the column, you can just feel another tax hike coming our way, so prepare to fight!

It’s refreshing to see a Wisconsin teacher not in lockstep with WEAC.

UW Milwaukee Freshmen get a shock

by @ 5:22 pm. Filed under Home, Schools / Education

Mark Belling broke a story tonight, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee freshmen are reporting to school this weekend, but many incoming freshmen got an email today that informed them that they miscalculated and some freshmen moving into the dorms will be forced to live 3 to a room, and these are very small rooms, even for dorms.

I am sure many students will have their computers packed up and are traveling and will not get that email until they find out the hard way.

UWM says this will only effect about 50 students and they hope to have room for everyone within a few months.

Is this who we want running our schools?

by @ 8:10 pm. Filed under Schools / Education

Today, the paper ran a short story about a MPS school board member, Charlene Hardin. She is being evicted and sued. The paper however failed to mention that this is just another in a long pattern of evictions, lawsuits and failure to pay her taxes. She has several judgments for tens of thousands of dollars and she has failed to make a single payment.

I am to lazy today and don’t want to look up and link to all of the information, so I’ll let you listen to Charlie do the heavy lifting.

Charlie Sykes on Charlene Hardin (5:30)

This is not the type of person we need handling the MPS budget of over $1 Billion. We need people that are responsible, not a dead beat that refuses to pay her own bills!

Failure Deferred Success

by @ 10:27 am. Filed under Schools / Education

I was on my way home and had the car radio on. Charlie Sykes started a topic that made me laugh out loud. In England (also being looked at in the U.S.) there is a movement in Education to remove the word failure from the education system. From now on, if they gert their way, when you fail, they will call it Deferred Success

Exam failure equals deferred success
THE concept of “failure” should be removed from the British education system and be replaced with “deferred success”, according to a motion being considered by a teaching union.

Where do people come up with stupid ideas like this? Failure by any other name is still failure.

UW System waste: Here is your tax & tuition dollars at work

by @ 8:09 am. Filed under Schools / Education

The University of Wisconsin is paying a lot of people for not working, after someone resigns, they get a years paid leave, some make almost $200K and don’t have to come in or account for their time in any way.

Just remember these things when they cry poverty next year like they do every year, and for you students and parents of students that just got your 7% tuition increase a few weeks ago, this is how your money is being spent.

JS Online: UWM grants leaves after resignations
Under what it described as a common practice, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has paid four former administrators more than $600,000 in taxpayer dollars for yearlong leaves granted after their resignations.

The leaves were given to three deans and the university’s provost over the past four years. Two of the four agreed to resign from their tenured faculty positions as well, according to copies of settlement agreements provided by UWM.

University officials say former administrators are expected to use paid leaves to prepare to resume teaching or research. But they acknowledge that the university doesn’t track what the administrators do during their leaves and can produce no record of their activities.
