I’ve got $10 that says Chief Justice Rehnquist is sitting back and getting a good laugh at the reaction he is seeing in the MSM & the Democratic party. They all expected Rehnquist to retire, no one was expecting him to stay while O’Connor left. I have another $10 that says Rehnquist also had something to do with the timing of this, with O’Connor retiring first. The template was to allow Rehnquist to be replaced with another conservative, then the big fight would be over anything else that could be a swing vote, and O’Connor is the ultimate swing vote!
There has been an unwritten law that says only one justice would retire each session so as to not leave the bench short handed, so many knowledgeable people are now of the opinion that Rehnquist plans to stay.
I expect this to be the most bloody judicial fight ever seen, Bork & Thomas was nothing compared to what this next justice will be put through, I hope they have the strength to put up with being vilified by Ted Kennedy and his ilk.
On a related note, since I expect this to be a long protracted fight, I will be adding a new Category (on the sidebar), The Judiciary and topics relating to the fight for the next Justice will be linked there.
The big news of the day is of course the retirement of Sandra Day O’Connor. As I said a few days ago here, the big fight wouldn’t be the replacement of Rehnquist, it would be someone like O’Connor, a change that would swing the balence of power on the court.
I will be posting more later and assuredly over the weeks to come, I just wanted to make this quick post as long as I found a hot spot
(BTW, this new laptop is coming in handy.)
