FINALLY! The final three are being introduced
Personal Opinion: The Winner of Milwaukee’s Talkstar Compitition is… WTMJ Radio
Here is the audio, I have clipped it down to about 21 minutes. (.wma audio)Today is the day
Well, it’s Friday night… The Milwaukee Talkstar website STILL says the winner would be named four days ago. There is no reference to when it will actually happen, but if I remember correctly, it will happen at 7:30 tonight, I plan to try to catch it, but this delay and lack of promotion is a real downer.
If anyone can confirm the time before it happens, I’d appreciate it.
If anyone is at the State Fair and gets pictures, I would love to see them and with your permission, post some of them. As much as I have been grousing, I really do wish I would have been able to get there. Good Luck!

Mark Belling teased a major announcement for the 5:00 hour of his show today. At 5, he came on and started talking about his future and the opportunities he has been offered, especially since doing the Rush Limbaugh show. He also talked about the “incident” from last fall that still has some, including the Shepherd Express trying to get him fired. No one has been more polarizing or as influential in the local media, since he was the first to bring this sort of show to Milwaukee (actually, Belling was one of the first in the nation to do this). Belling talked about the decision he had to make, did he want to stay here, move on or do something totally different. He talked for 15 minutes as I felt that sinking feeling… Then he announced that he just signed a 6 year contract extension, I then yelled at the radio, “Damn You Belling!”
I remember that he sounded much the same way when he signed his last contract, but the good news is that this is a long term 6 year contract, so he won’t teas us like this again for a while.
Congratulations Mark and WISN!
A busy day in the Milwaukee Radio scene today, Tuesday July 26.
6:30-8:30 am: WISN’s contest for the next morning show host continues.
10:00 am: WTMJ’s Charlie Sykes will be joined by Steve Forbes to discuss his new book on the Flat Tax.
12:00-3:00: Mark Belling is sitting in for Rush Limbaugh again today. If you missed him yesterday and are a 24/7 member, Belling’s show is available as a Podcast. Kevin Fisher will be sitting in for Belling from 3:00 to 6:00.
I found this via Michelle Malkin, originally posted at BizzyBlog: Talk Radio in Beginning of Decline? Blame Blogs?
The question is, are Bloggers talking away talk radio listeners? I think it’s a good question, but one we here in Milwaukee have a unique spin on. Milwaukee has a very strong talk radio presence, we have two stations that do exclusively political talk radio during the days, except for Rush Limbaugh, the hosts are local and very good. So, at least around here, the “big conservative” hosts are not loosing out to Bloggers, they may be loosing out to other conservative voices though. Also, many of the conservative talkers are quite effective on the web on their own. Limbaugh, Hannity and others have a massive web presence (not all for free), Rush’s is the most extensive with a lot of news information and even audio of entire shows for several weeks. These larger websites give them the opportunity to reach people even if they don’t listen to the radio show.
In the Milwaukee Market
One of our most popular local talk radio hosts, Charlie Sykes, is also a Blogger and I do think that his blog adds to the show. It is a tool that he can use to post letters and links to stories so people can expand on the show. Charlie has also given other local Bloggers a voice by inviting several of us to spend an hour on his radio show to discuss how talk radio and alternative sources like Bloggers have changed the way people get their news. As a matter of fact, this meeting of like minded bloggers led to the creation of the Badger Blog Alliance, a group of Wisconsin Bloggers. Charlie is also willing to get involved in issues in the community, he was a driving force in the efforts to recall corrupt county officials.
Another strong local voice is Jeff Wagner, he has a blog too (although he doesn’t use it as much *hint*) and he brings a unique perspective on many subjects. Jeff is a former Federal Prosecutor and ran for Wisconsin Attorney General against now Governor Jim Doyle. Jeff has the toughest job in one way, he goes against Limbaugh for two hours, but in my opinion, he does a great job. Jeff also get’s involved in the community when he sees a need.
We also have Mark Belling, one of the top rated local shows in the nation. Belling is a pioneer in this style of talk radio. Mark is also known for being one of the Assistant Professors at the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies (translation for non-dittoheads: He fills in for Rush). Even after a local controversy, his numbers are higher than ever! He doesn’t use his website effectively though, I wish he would.
I realize that we in Milwaukee are spoiled, most cities are lucky to have one good local host for this genre, we have three, so at least in South Eastern Wisconsin, talk radio is alive and well. if the numbers are down for the big hosts, it’s because of competition from other Conservative voices.
UPDATE
Jessica McBride nails it again! She discusses the influence of Talk Radio on Milwaukee area politics and she is right on!
WisPolitics.com
After voters shot down almost three-fourths of state referendums in early April, far more than in past elections, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel theorized about the reasons they failed, particularly in the geographic region around Milwaukee, where nine of 10 went down.Reasons ranged from anti-tax fervor to a decline in state aid for schools. But the newspaper left out the elephant in the living room:
Talk radio.
Just thought I would pass along the disappointing news, Belling’s horse Becrux ran in a big race in UAE…Last report is he is now coming into the third turn and is expected to cross the finish line sometime late tomorrow
Sorry Mark, I was hopping for another Captain Bodgit, it is cool to “know” someone with a horse in the Kentucky Derby
Charlie, AWESOME show today! Insite 2005 was great, glad I recorded it, there were a few things I want to go over again because on my job I get interrupted now and then. This gives me something to do this weekend…Does that make me a news junkie?
