New details have come out today on the Summerfest Fireworks mess. It turns out that the whole island park does not need to be closed as claimed. They only need to close off 3 to 5 acres of the 17 acre island for two to three hours a night. So this park would have a small part closed for about 50 hours a year, and according to the DNR, this activity that brings pleasure to hundreds of thousands of Milwaukee area citizens, is unacceptable.
One DNR official is now threatening to have Summerfest’s lease revolked if they keep fighting for what the people clearly want.
Also, several Milwaukee elected officials are quietly supporting the DNR, that is why they have been silent. They know the vast majority of the voters love our fireworks, so they don’t want this public.
Who the hell do these people think they work for?

UPDATE
The paper has a story today too, and they are running a poll, about 85% say that the Festivals should be allowed to use the island!

That also looks to be the extent of the debate coverage in the Milwaukee paper too. My offer still stands.
