The Carnival of the Badger is up at Subject to Change.
Stop in and discover what special surprise Aaron has for us. I’m on my way to check it out myself.
UPDATE
Well, shiver me timbers, Aaron has a riddle for us swabbies.
A U.S. Senator won over $800 thousand in the Power Ball Lottery. Congratulations to him, but Dan Deibert asks a great question after reading this story.
NH Sen. Judd Gregg Wins Powerball Cash
On a whim, U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg pulled into a gas station in Washington this week and bought $20 worth of Powerball tickets. As he was leaving, a clerk ran after him because he had left one of the tickets behind.
"She was a very pleasant young woman; she might have kept it and for all I know it might have been the winning ticket," he said in a telephone news conference.
Gregg collected a check for $853,492 from the Powerball Lottery on Thursday.
According to his latest financial disclosure form, Gregg has between $1.5 million and $6.2 million in stocks and other major investments.
Dan Deibert asks, "Seriously, I like the way they felt the need to include his financial info. Do they do that to all Powerball winners or just the Republicans?"
Dan also wonders how long it will take for the Lib’s to ask for an investigation
This is great news, we will finally get a decent investigation into Jim Doyle’s little Travel-Gate.
JS Online: Joint probe of state travel contract announced Federal, state and local authorities have launched a joint investigation into a controversial travel contract given the company of a major contributor to Gov. Jim Doyle, U.S. Attorney Steven M. Biskupic said today.
"By working together, we want to avoid any accusations of bias," Biskupic said.
The investigation into possible criminal activity will be conducted by both the FBI and the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation, which is supervised by Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager. Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard also will play a role in the process, said Biskupic, who was appointed to the U.S. attorney’s post by President Bush, a Republican. Lautenschlager, Blanchard and Doyle are Democrats.
I certainly wouldn’t have trusted this investigation if it was only Lautenschlager and Blanchard, but with Steve Biskupic and the FBI involved, I believe we may get to the bottom of this.
I notice that Mark Reardon is filling in for Jeff Wagner for the next few days, does anyone know who will be doing Reardon’s show? If it has been talked about today, I haven’t heard it, but I’ll be checking in to see if it is one of our favorite Bloggers, Jessica McBride again.
UPDATE: No Jess tonight
Joe Schelfa (I know I butchered that name too) is doing the Reardon show tonight.
The truck driver (with a suspended license) involved in the accident that killed 5 students and instructors is missing after being released from the hospital…
That honeymoon didn’t last long…
JS Online: Board inches toward property tax increase As Dan Vrakas basked in a sweeping Election Day victory, Waukesha County Board members moved closer Wednesday to passing a property tax increase that the new county executive might veto.
Elected one day earlier by a 2-to-1 ratio on a campaign promise of controlling taxes, Vrakas said he would wait for the County Board to approve a final budget package before deciding whether to exercise his veto authority.
But the state legislator from Delafield called on county supervisors to show restraint on property taxes in acknowledgment of the overwhelming victory he enjoyed in Tuesday’s county executive balloting.
"I think the County Board clearly saw the results of the election," he said. "They understand the mandate."
No Dan, I doubt that they "understand the mandate" you can expect to have to come out of the blocks fighting for what 67% of the People elected you to do.
Dwyer, who maintains the board chairman position after losing the county executive race, said he hopes to avoid a power struggle, in which two-thirds of the County Board could override Vrakas’ veto.
But Dwyer said cutting $2.8 million from next year’s budget would "decimate" some county departments.
I rest my case.
