Committee approves new Miller Park scoreboard

by @ 7:11 pm. Filed under Home

Miller Park Taxpayers, assume the position…

I discussed this a few days ago, The Brewers plan to spend about $3.25 million on a new video system to "ring" the statuim. Much of the money in the fund yused for this project comes from… You guessed it, Taxpayers

Scott Walker and Bill McReynolds both came out against this plan as an inappropriate  use of tax dollars, but today, on a 4-1 vote of the finance committee of the stadium’s five-county district board, they voted to approve the purchase.

I don’t have the names yet, but Mark Belling reported that the members that voted yes were two Doyle appointees, one Sheboygan County representative and one of Scott Walkers Appointees.

Scott Walker came out this afternoon and called for the possible rewriting of the Miller Park Lease agreement. I hope to post more details ASAP.

JS Online: DayWatch

A stadium district committee today approved a new electronic scoreboard for Miller Park over objections from county officials who said the cost, drawn in part from a taxpayer-based endowment, should be paid by private sources instead.

The $3.25 million scoreboard was approved by a 4-1 vote of the finance committee of the stadium’s five-county district.

The money to upgrade the scoreboard was already budgeted for 2008 but the Brewers asked for the upgrade to be accelerated to keep up with other Major League ballparks.

Members of the finance committee said the stadium lease contractually obligates them to approve any measures of improvement if at least 75 percent of other major league ballparks have them.

Currently 22 of the 30 teams have the high-definition electronic displays, according to Mike Duckett, the executive director of the stadium district. The Florida Marlins just contracted to have the new scoreboards installed by Opening Day of 2006, he said. The Marlins would become the 23rd team with them, thereby surpassing the 75 percent threshold.

The money for the new Miller Park scoreboard will come from a reserve fund endowed by the Brewers and taxpayers from five counties. County officials earlier criticized the proposal, claiming the fund was meant to pay for stadium repairs and improve customer access, not to provide extra luxuries.

Readers of this Blog will know that this is the topic that sparked my rant on talk show host Mark Reardon. Today, the host that Reardon was sitting in for as he supported this use of tax dollars, Jeff Wagner also came out against this plan.

Sex offender housing refused

by @ 12:05 pm. Filed under Home

Someone had the bright idea to house violent sexual predators in the heard of Marquette University. Fortunately someone had the good sense to shoot it down

JS Online: Sex offender housing refused Revealing a closely held secret, the leaders of an Episcopal church across from Milwaukee’s downtown public library and an alternative high school building have mailed letters telling parishioners that they offered to let the state convert a parish structure into transitional housing for sex offenders returning to the community.

However, the Department of Health and Family Services rejected that informal proposal by St. James Church after engineers and other staff members examined the site and its locale, according to the letter and church and state officials.

St. James Church, 833 W. Wisconsin Ave., already has been a lightning rod for public controversy by letting homeless people sleep outdoors there while living out its mission statement "to welcome all people into the presence of Christ. . . . "

But its site in the western downtown business district next to a Marquette University dormitory would have added intensity to an issue that has generated fierce opposition no matter where officials have tried to house sex offenders in Milwaukee County.
