MPD Chief Nan Hegerty now says that she can not change the district boundaries as planned.
The purpose of this letter is to share with you a problem I have encountered in implementing the reorganization of the Milwaukee Police Department. It was my intent to enact the changes to our district boundaries this fall, but I have been advised of the actual costs associated with the movement of personnel, vehicles, and equipment that are both necessary and required by associated labor contracts. It seems the logistical portion of the re-districting cannot be accomplished because money is not available in our current budget.
Therefore, it will be necessary to delay the re-districting plan until after January 1, 2008. At that time, we will know if any funds remain in the 2007 operating budget or if funds are available in the 2008 budget to purchase the necessary items and services. I regret the changes cannot be applied in the current fiscal year and during my tenure.
Sincerely,
NANNETTE H. HEGERTY
CHIEF OF POLICE
I still wonder why she, who will be gone in a few months, would be making this change, saddling the incoming chief with this policy change?
Alderman Willie Hines is contemplating a proposal to cap Milwaukee Police overtime and use the savings to fill some of the existing Police Officer vacancies. He will be discussing this with various entities of City government for their input.
What do you think of this idea?
Representative Sheldon Wasserman (D) promised he “will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.” But now, just a few weeks later, he is already going George Bush Sr. on us and backing away from the pledge.
Wasserman is challenging a true Conservative, Alberta Darling (R) for her seat in the State Senate, and this broken pledge WILL be remembered!
