This afternoon at about 2:30, I drove past the Bumble Bee Learning Center, a day care, it was surrounded by police cars, fire trucks and crime tape. A few minutes later I had a chance to fire off a quick text message to Bruce, reporting what I saw, and that I feared that another child may have been left in a van. About an hour later, the tragic news broke that a 4 month old infant had been “forgotten” in a van, and the baby was dead.

This day care is owned by the same woman who owns Alphabet St preschool, where just a few weeks ago an employee, Pamela Coleman confessed to squeezing and twisting a baby’s arm because she was “stressed out” from taking care of 11 other children.

As I asked yesterday, how much is the life of a baby worth? Not much around here…

When are we going to ban these dangerous vans?

  2. Super Id Says:

This seems to be a common occurrence in Milwaukee

What’s worse is that we taxpayers pay for this criminal negligence. It’s the added bit of salt into the gaping wound that is the loss of innocent life.

Patrick, there is a lot of money in childcare.
Most of it I dare say subsidized by the taxpayer.
There are many good people who go to work each day and leave their tiny Angels in the hands of these day cares and day care workers. I fear the knee jerk solution to this.
More GOVERNMENT. I can predict what the knee jerk reaction from the powers that be will be.
More regulation and cries of woe about the pay of those who care for these helpless babies and tots.
Paying bus and van drivers more does not make them more responsible. It’s pretty basic work. Patrick, you once were a CABBIE. These drivers are CABBIES for children. They have precious cargo. If the cargo was GOLD, it would never be forgotten in a locked van or bus. It’s pretty simple. Make sure the bus, car or van is empty before parking it and locking the doors. Maybe leaving a $10 bill under the very back seat would work??? Those who are transporting these darlings cannot be made more responsible by more government regulation. If those who transport these children cannot do the most basic of functions, and that is……checking each seat before leaving, then there is no job that they are capable of.
The bottom line is that we have such LOW STANDARDS and LOW EXPECTATIONS for the basic common sense and human abilities in our society.
The solution to this type of dysfunction is higher PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY STANDARDS.
Half of Milwaukees public school victims don’t graduate. Their families ethic did not and does not include the most basic of achievements and requirements necessary for a successful and fulfilled life. We’ve created this.
