The actual numbers won’t be released until later today, but reports are that the first quarter of the year shows a continuation in the decline of both violent and property crimes. I’ll throw the numbers at you later, but the good news on the crime fighting front continues.

If the early release prison bill passes, I’ll bet almost anything those numbers will go right back up for next year!! I’d also bet that the rise in crime will certainly cost much more than the $27 or so million that the Governor claims will be saved. Think of the costs of crime that aren’t mentioned, higher costs of goods from every type of retail store (covers costs businesses loss from theft). Higher costs for health care and health insurance (property criminals do sometimes become violent and injure people, more drug users overdosing requiring hospitalization, etc). Higher cost for auto and homeowners insurance (more claims from accidents and from theft). It goes on and on, to probably more than $27 million, but our taxes won’t go up. Oops, that won’t happen either, because now useless probation programs will have to be paid for as well…

The numbers for this first quarter include:

Nearly 1,600 fewer people were victims of violent crime in Milwaukee the first three months of this year compared to the same period in 2008, according to data released today by Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn.

The first quarter crime data clearly shows the continuing decline of major crime in Milwaukee. Highlights include a 20 percent reduction in robbery, a 23 percent reduction in aggravated assault, a 20 percent reduction in burglary, and a 30 percent reduction in auto theft.

You can see the spreadsheet with totals, here.
