We’ve all been wondering why Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett took so long to announce his run for Wisconsin Governor. Could it be some devious strategizing by high-level Dem operatives?

Barrett-Obama Meet

Tom Barrett’s oratory audible during his lackluster announcement, as mentioned by Patrick, was nothing more than his true self coming up for air. Seeing the popularity of Scott Walker and recognizing the challenges that lay ahead of them, the Democrat powers-that-be have seen a need for dramatic manuevers. Going forward, Barrett will likely try to portray himself as something akin to a “deficit hawk,” a label Jay Weber applied to Mr. Obama in response to the President’s rebranding.

How will Barrett do it?

Why have dyed-in-the-wool Democrats like Jim Doyle and Tom Barrett squared off against one of their biggest special interest supporters, the teachers’ unions, with their announced intention to takeover MPS? It gives Barrett the ability to say, “look at what I’ve tried to do” to every Wisconsin voter outside of Milwaukee, without actually having to reign in the drunken sailors who make up the MPS Board of Directors.

Could it be that, from the start, it has been a political strategy aimed at winning support for the governor’s race outside of Milwaukee County? Wisconsin’s Dems are savvy enough to recognize that they can’t campaign on their tax-and-spend ways in this economy that has been slow to recover. (Mind you, I’m not referring to the juvenile party leadership of Mike Tate, who spends his time producing snarky junk like this, but the real powers in the State.) Barrett realizes he needs to portray himself as Wisconsin’s own Democrat deficit hawk if he wants to win a vote from moderates and non-Milwaukeeans. In order to make it look authentic, he had to announce the takeover and let some time pass before making his allegedly reluctant announcement.

Will this lead to authentic change in policy, or is this a campaign strategy? Does anyone really believe a true Democrat relishes a fight against the teacher’s unions? Come on, really? Perhaps you think they are willing to dump the trial lawyer and government employee special interests as well. Personally, I believe that the move to takeover MPS is a fraud. So far, it’s been a rhetorical exercise in the State legislature that is just starting to take the shape of a bill. The reality is Mayor Barrett has no more power to control the MPS budget or taxing authority than he did a year ago…a situation that will change little by November 2010.

What the hell would Barrett have to do as governor? The die is cast for the ass raping already. Mandatory kindergarten for the kiddies which funds the teacher’s unions and gives away free day care — check.

Increase in state taxes — check.

all the retard has to do is, do a Johnny Norquist and sit on his ass and do nothing.

He has nothing to lose by running.
