The taxpayers of Milwaukee are hammered over and over, we are losing jobs left & right, but there is always another plan to spend our tax dollars. During recessionary times, we citizens have to cut back, but they don’t have that problem in government. The latest, the police department wants to update their administration building. I’m not arguing the merits of this upgrade, it may very well be needed, but right now, can the taxpayers of Milwaukee take another hit?
Flynn wants $46 million to update MPD headquarters
Milwaukee Police Department spending is coming under a closer scrutiny these days, especially when the department wants to remodel buildings. The latest pitch from the MPD is for $46.3 million over five years to renovate the Police Administration Building on N. 9th and W. State Streets. The building houses police offices, municipal court and the city jail, along with other administrative offices. It has seen some, albeit infrequent, money for rehab purposes.
I also see that the Police chief, Ed Flynn is still snipping at this blog for raising questions over the failing $18+ million OpenSky radio system.
Flynn also took on some of the radio critics.
“As far as I’m concerned that’s for entertainment value,” he countered. “There’s a lot of different agendas out there regarding the police department that have nothing to do with the communications system … And if there’s people out there that can use concerns about the communication system to whip up dissatisfaction about other things they’ll happily do it.”
“We’re going to make this thing work,” he said.
The agenda is keeping officers safe, a 92.8 percent efficiency rating isn’t good enough, if it was, officers wouldn’t be coming to, what you called the pretend world of the anonymous blogosphere, and officers like Sergeant Willie Murphy wouldn’t risk their jobs speaking out.

When the new Comm Data Center, which houses Police District #3; the Communications Dispatch Operations; and the Central Records Division, was christened back in December 2001, several of the major administrative sections that were housed in the old Police Administration Building (actually located at 7th and State Streets) were moved out to the new building over the next several years. In fact Crime Analysis and Command Staff meetings were conducted out there.
I’d be interested in learning more about what this proposal involves. I’m sure after many years that the building needs some renovation, but $46 million worth? I do remember that the elevators were incredibly inefficient and unreliable. Seemed like the elevator repair crew was out there so often that they could have been assigned their own room in the building.
That 5 year time frame is interesting too.

Ed Flynn, I knew you from Springfield, MA. You were a bagman for the Democrats then and just as big a tool now. Your officers come 2nd to your perks and your political IOUs.

Flynn always gets what he wants-from City Hall.
The Police officers should assist him in funding this project in taking more “furlough”days to show that they are “team”players.HELLO

Pharoh wants a new palace, Great.
We can afford a $46 mil remodel, we can afford to paint old cars with a new scheme instead of just phasing the old scheme out.
We can’t afford to give police officers radios that work, we can’t afford to hire new police officers to replace the ones that retired or resigned, we can’t afford to pay the ones we have so we violate their contract by a lock out, we can’t afford to speak the truth…

$46 million for a remodeling. That’s nothing, Baumann wants to build an entirely new building at 27th and Wisconsin.
If I recall correctly, Flynn also complained about the HVAC system and there was something said about property storage. It would burn up if there was a fire or everything would be ruined if the sprinkler system was activated. Can’t remember which.
By the way, the radios work 92.8% of the time. That means about 1 out of 12 transmissions don’t make it through. That’s disgraceful and dangerous.

@mr. parker I think Alderman Bauman’s take on it really is, if we are about to spend $46 million then would it be better in the long run to move the station, or fix it in place.

Since this has turned into a bashing of ED… I would like to join. I would just like to say that I feel bad for Officers Kunisch & Norberg for their serious injurious they sustained when they were shot. However I think ED Flynn and his sidekick/ass kisser Anne are a bunch of rascist. The way they have treated the hispanic officers that have been shot including most rescent officer Vidal Colon compared to the way they have bent over backwards for the two white officers is totally messed up.

Pancho, my opinion of Flynn has changed quite alot since his first year when I was very supportive of the things he was doing. That said, allegations of racism should only be made after careful consideration and analysis of the facts/overt actions on the part of the accused. I spent 29 years on the job and the “R” word was thrown around quite a bit whenever anyone (myself included) merely expressed an opinion contrary to what is considered politically correct. I realize that space is limited to cite every example to support your opinion here, but I can’t accept this one example as evidence of racism. If true, then it certainly would be an example of gross oversight on his part.

I agree, Pancho.
Examples of Flynn’s racism include:
- painting squad cars black & white, where white is the center (and focal point) of the new scheme
- only dating white women
- only policing areas of the city with a majority non-white population
- attending a White Sox game

Are you so sure Flynn has only dated white women? I get the feeling he’d fire off a few rounds into anyone that’d hold still long enough.

I wonder if he’s still boinking whatshername? You know that dimwitted dingbat that was married to the former Waukesha County DA.
Anybody know?

maybe you shouldn’t call someone a dimwitted when you can’t remember her name.
