What a terrible way to open Summerfest.
One dead, two injured in downtown concrete collapse
One person was killed and two others were injured when a concrete slab fell from a parking garage in downtown Milwaukee Thursday afternoon, officials said.Initial reports were that a child had been trapped by the slab, a Fire Department spokeswoman said. The age of the person who died has not been released.
The two other people who were injured are expected to survive, police said. One of those people has been taken by ambulance to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, a Fire Department spokeswoman said.
Most of the time, that structure sits empty, but today is probably the busiest day of the year.
As events were unfolding, Bruce wondered how long it would take for Walker haters to try and blame him… If it hasn’t happened yet, I’ll bet it will… Before the bodies get cold.

Belling was talking about this and said something about there being concerns raised about the safety of this parking structure a long time ago. I think he said it was built 25 years ago and that concerns were raised back then already.

Yeah, the building have been a mess from day one. That JS link I posted has a brief outline of the early days and all the structural problems.

And Lee Holloway has made a prophet out of Bruce…

The last paragraph:
“Earlier this year, stone chunks fell off of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. We are also dealing
with numerous structural problems at the Mental Health Complex. Now, today, we are dealing with
a terrible tragedy. As we move into the 2011 Budget process, I am pleading with the County
Executive to work with the County Board to address the deferred maintenance backlog in parks, as well as the long-term safety and maintenance of all County facilities.”

Well, they announced the victim’s names. The mother and son sounded familiar, and I just did a quick search. I believe that this is the family that lost their son in that tragic car crash in December 09 down in East Troy.
Here’s the obituary for Amy’s son and Eric’s brother:

It must make this accident even more tragic for all of them. My prayers are with all of them.
And all of these idiots in Milwaukee and Wisconsin that are trying to politicize this are sick, twisted, and heartless. They are truly bad, ugly people for doing so.

Life can end in the blink of an eye, as this tragic incident reminds us. Always remember to tell the people you love that you love them.

Blogging Blue is politicizing it. Disgusting.

Comes as no surprise Paul. It seems the very people who have come to us asking for restraint are incapble of exercising that same discipline themselves. Typical.
