Doyle & state Democrats steal $200 million, but it will be us taxpayers that get stuck with the bill.
Court strikes down raid on malpractice fund
The state Supreme Court Tuesday struck down lawmakers’ 2007 raid of a medical malpractice fund, handing a win to state doctors and opening a massive $200 million hole in the state’s finances. In making its 5-2 decision, the justices overturned a lower court ruling and found that doctors had an ownership stake in the state fund used to compensate patients or family members harmed by medical malpractice.
“We conclude that the health care providers have a constitutionally protected property interest in the fund,” Justice David Prosser wrote for the majority.
To balance the state budget, the Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle in October 2007 approved taking $200 million from the state fund to compensate patients or family members harmed by medical malpractice.
State doctors, who pay fees into the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund, sued later that year to have the transfer declared illegal and the money returned to the fund.

I would argue that Wisconsin taxpayers have an equal “constitutionally protected property interest” in a segregated transportation fund that is NOT being used to build or improve any roads, in a “Real ID” driver’s license surcharge NOT being lumped into the state’s general fund, and a per-telephone “Police and Fire Protection Fee” ACTUALLY being used to fund public safety.
I don’t know what makes me more sick: That the Democrats play their smoke-and-mirrors games, budget cycle after budget cycle, raiding (read: stealing from) this fund and that fund, imposing fees that are rarely used for their purported purpose… or that the state news media buys into the Democrats’ bullshit when they emerge from their bunker at 5:00 AM, declaring the state budget “balanced,” with the only evidence of said fact they can provide is that it’s printed in their press release.
It’s time to bring down this Democrat party which has done nothing but driven business and wealth from this state, rewarded Doyle’s campaign donors with fat state contracts, robbed us of our freedoms, and left the state bankrupt in their wake. If private business people conducted themselves the way that Doyle and his circle of minions have, they’d go to prison. (Oh, wait. Dennis Troha ALMOST did. And Doyle STILL kept his money.)
Any of you morons who still have Doyle/Lawton stickers on the bumpers of your Subaru Outbacks should face mandatory electroshock therapy.
Scott Walker for governor.
