At least according to New York Governor David Paterson, in comments earlier today:

“There are overtones of potential racial coding in the campaign,” Paterson said at an event in New York City.

Paterson said that while Republican candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin haven’t directly talked about race, it’s strongly implied in comments Alaska Gov. Palin and others have made about Obama. McCain’s camp said Paterson’s claim is false.

“The Republican party is too smart to call Barack Obama ‘black’ in a sense that it would be a negative,” Paterson said. “But you can take something about his life, which I noticed they did at the Republican convention. A ‘community organizer,’ they kept saying it, they kept laughing, like what does this mean?”

It’s no longer about what candidates “directly talk about”, it’s about what they imply. It’s about their racial coding.

If you’d like to see the actual video of Paterson’s comments to Manhattan media (the AP, for some reason, opted to pick up the story) you can do so here at this NY1 video link. In the video which NY1 uses in direct relation to Paterson’s remarks, they cite Palin’s quote in her RNC speech last week:

I guess a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Kind of an odd soundbite to base cries of “racism” upon, isn’t it? Strange, maybe it’s because I’m a suburban moderate, but I didn’t catch the hidden “racist” meaning in that statement. Perhaps I’m not enlightened enough to catch it. Yes, that’s it… I probably need more compassion and enlightenment.

According to recent polling, the Republican message is being embraced wholeheartedly by a variety of different segments of the American population.

Racists, one and all. It’s the only possible explanation.

The term “community organizer” evokes the image of a rabble rouser in my mind. The Big O’s supporters don’t care for that image, even though that’s the term Obama himself has used repeatedly.

Likewise McCain’s supporters are crying foul over Obama’s use of the phrase “lipstick on a pig” claiming it’s an attack on Palin. Shows me what they really think of her.

McCain’s now running on a platform of change… I’m waiting for him to speak of the “audacity of hope.”

And we’re gonna put one of these clown in the White House? At least the winner won’t have a very hard act to follow.

  2. Gracelynn Says:

So I guess Obama comment about “lipstick on a pig is still a pig” is sexism coding and I expect David Paterson to come out accusing the Obama campign of being sexist.
What most people don’t understand about community organizer is how it relates to being a President.
    I don’t either.
It seems like a community organizer listens to a community and organizes ideas and target to fight to get what the community wants.
How do they balance a budget? Decide what important in the budget and get congress to apporve. Pay off the debt accumlated previously to your term in office.
Maybe answers to these questions will stop people questioning what a community organizer does.

  3. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I wonder how David Paterson feels about pothole repair in New York?

  4. Ron Says:

The word “community” was adopted by blacks as meaning “black community” quite a while ago.

So, it seems they are projecting their racism onto us, again.

  5. Amy P. Says:

Imagine if Obama wins. The guy could burn down the White House or something and no one would be able to criticize him because it is “racial coding”…

This whole If-you-don’t-vote-for-Obama-you’re-racist shtick is pretty damned sickening at this point.

It’s the policies, not the race, that I am not voting for.

  6. Jaeson Says:

This is a game the left has been playing for some time now.

Essentially what they’re doing is attempting to immunize their side from any criticism, but limiting the available vocabulary of the opposition thereby controlling the conversation.

So any word at all that even remotely criticises someone in the “community,” will then be labeled hate speech until no words are available with which to criticise.

This is disconcerting because at the same time they are working for legislatino against hate speech, while at the same time labeling any criticisms they don’t like as hate speech.

If they continue along these lines, they’ll be able to eliminate any speech that they find offensive, which is just about evwerything when you think about it.

  7. HeatherRadish Says:

So, every time Barry O says he was a community organizer, he’s telling us he’s black (over and over and over)? I thought he was telling us he was an overeducated privileged kid who thought he’d go build up his resume using people he ordinarily wouldn’t give the time of day.

  8. Fired Up Says:

The race card has kinda worn out like a John McCain war story so not why pull out another card from the deck? They could easily pull out the class card on that one. Start throwing out everything, even the kitchen sink. If they are trying to garner sympathy and promote outrage it’s not working. The Republicans have that market cornered. All of the outrage is really backlash from years of playing the race card. All the angry white males and now angry white females have found someone to rally against, that being Obama. This is getting too easy for the Palin-McCain camp. If I were the Democrats, at this point I wouldn’t even mention anything being put out by the Republicans. At this point it’s just punch, counter-punch and the Obama camp is getting whipped.

  9. gus Says:

Fired up, are you equating using race to further your career with using military service, honor and extreme sacrifice for you country, as proof of your character? Obama was born half black, and he lets us know it. McCain graduated from the Naval Academy, fought for his country, got shot down, broke numerous bones, got bayonetted in the groin had his shoulder broken and his teeth knocked out during torture. He refused the oppurtunity to be released from captivity as his sworn oath as a military office (Lt. Commander) and paid with his health, his teeth his bones and 5 and a half years of his life.
Are you comparing Mr.McCains valor with Obama’s half color?
    Just wondering.

  10. Jaeson Says:

All of the outrage is really backlash from years of playing the race card. All the angry white males and now angry white females have found someone to rally against, that being Obama.

This is quite possibly the stupidest ever sentence written. Ever.

Obama’s blackness has nothing to do with anything, except in your mind. I’m a white male who opposes Obama because of the incorrect socialist policies he wants to force on the American public, not because of skin pigmentation.

You moonbat morons, are the ones who keep focusing on the divisions of race, because those divisions are what keeps you people in business. Without those divisions, there is simply no need at all for the Democratic Party. Pure and simple.

  11. Fired Up Says:

I’m saying John McCain has been playing the POW card since he was elected into office 26yrs ago. I’m just saying it’s to the point where it is being exploited and politicized by the Republican party. Great he served his country, I did too. He was fired at, I was too. He was a POW in 2000 and 2004 but I didn’t hear as many people singing his praises then. I’m comparing his service to something that has been exploited over and over, year after year. Is that going to be the answer of every question that is asked of him? Just as are people going to use the race card to explain everything?

  12. Brian Says:

So if this is a racial code word it means white folks are incapable of Community Organizing??? Obama brought this upon himself.
When a political candidate has to place near the top of his resume: “Community Organizer” it simply amplifies the fact that the man has never held a real job.
REAL JOB being defined as: having not been on the government teet, served in defense of his/her country, had to meet a payroll, had to actually make, fix or sell something on the free market against competition.
So while community organizing is a very nice gesture and I am sure he has helped some fellow American Citizens in his CO role, it hardly qualifies as a resume gold star to tout ones (lack of) executive experience.
If I received a resume from a potential employee applicant that listed his/her job qualifications as Community Organizer; I’d place this in the same category as having been in the Boy Scouts, served on the PTA, played athletics, etc…nice acheivements to be sure, but hardly a qualification to be hired as an executive.
    Brian

  13. Brian Says:

In answer to Amy P’s question about Obama burning down the White House. No worries Amy, Obama will invite Bill Ayers over and we can let the bombing proceed!!!!
    Brian

  14. gus Says:

Thanks for the clarification Fired up. I agree with you, Obama’s race card has expired. Or in the parlance of the credit card companies it is DECLINED.
As for McCain and your personal service, God bless you and thanks for your service. You seem a little bitter though. How long were you prisoner of war? Are you injuries healed yet.
McCain was a prisoner for 5 and a half years. Did I mention that before? His injuries will never fully heal.
I think you have John McCain confused with John Kerry. John McCain rarely speaks of his military service, and though he wasn’t my first choice for President he has shown true personal character and sacrifice. McCain paid a very very dear price. Obama has done jack diddly.
Again, I truly respect your service to our country.

  15. big_hairy_bubba Says:

I give McCain props for the dues he paid as a POW. But I don’t forgive him for his effoorts and attempts to pass Shamnesty. I’m strongly tempted to write in Tancredo.

  16. gus Says:

Good post Bhb. I understand your feelings, McCain and Obismal are pretty equal on the illegal alien front. Look at it this way. If you vote for Trancredo, whom I like and Gwen Moore votes for Obama. She trumps you. In other words, her vote is valuable yours is not. Just food for thought. I agree we should build a fence, close the door, lock it and then play Cowboys.
    Round ‘em up pardner..

  17. Fired Up Says:

Gus I revere McCain’s service and the horror he went through cause I know 9 out of 10 of us couldn’t make it through that ordeal. I just don’t like when it is politicized and used over and over again, maybe that’s why I sound bitter. I feel my military service is something I should do, not something I did to receive accolades. A lot of veterans have that attitude. If you think I’m a douche bag and my opinions are just like putting lip stick on a pig let me know.
Another thing; my unit was in Deming, New Mexico building the border fence and on the first day at the job site we caught five illegals crossing. It’s really bad down there. Someone who wanted to do this country harm could easily cross the border, if they haven’t done so already. I’m not against immigration, I’m against people who immigrate illegally. We have to secure our borders.

  18. big_hairy_bubba Says:

It’s not just farm workers and landscapers. As our manufacturing jobs go south and east, our remaining professional jobs are increasingly take by H1b aliens brought in under trumped up shortages to hold down salaries. The pace of attacks on our citizens has increased greatly during the last 8 years under Dubya.

I’d almost put up with 4 years of Obama to deliver a public b*tch slap to Dubya and his cronies.

  19. gus Says:

I don’t think you are a douche bag at all. I simply disagree. McCain himself does not politicize his service, though the party does to some extent. Where I disagree with you is that McCain’s service was exemplary. You said 9 out of 10 of us couldn’t make it through McCain’s ordeal. I submit 999 out of 1000 of us couldn’t. And probably 99 out of 100 Service men or women couldn’t or wouldn’t have taken the N.V’s offer to go home. You are former service, you should understand that what McCain did and endured was extreme. So I guess I think that his P.O.W. legacy is off the charts as it relates to his Patriotism, valor, courage and his character.
I’ve heard libs rip him for a divorce. You try being separated from you wife for 6 years and just re-start things. Obama was doing cocaine AFTER John and Cindy McCain married. I do not agree with all of McCain’s politics by a long shot, but I think the man is a great American and honorable. I do not believe Obama is.

  20. Mr. Parker Says:

Everytime I hear about problems on our southern border I cringe. You should get a free subscription to Blackwater Tactical Weekly, this issue has so many stories about Mexican problems and border incidents its pathetic.
This is the topic that I disagree with McCain on the most and W.Why they have this blind spot I don’t know, and you’re right about H1b jobs, they are are actually leaving the country and being outsourced to India. With the exception of farmworkers, the Mexicans and OTM’s are not taking jobs no Americans want, they’re working for wages no American will accept.

  21. gus Says:

If they weren’t here, those that hire them would have to pay Americans a legal wage. The competition for a work force would demand it. Illegal immigration suppresses wages.

  22. Martin Says:

Glenn, wasn’t Paterson the goofball state Rep. that tried to get a law passed that required Police Officers “Shot to wound” instead of using Deadly Force?

  23. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I don’t know, Martin - could be. Wouldn’t surprise me as there are alot of people, including some former police administrators I’ve known, who think TV cops are the real thing.
