This is what you get when you have a results oriented Police Chief who has a “preemptive policing” philosophy and who has been a real cop instead of one who is the flavor of the day and defines policing as “reactive”. The head of UWM’s School of Social Welfare/Criminal Justice program, Stan Stojkovic, may not be able to figure it out ( http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=792964) but the results achieved by Flynn’s policing strategy don’t surprise me at all.

  2. Peter Says:

    And treating thugs like thugs.

  3. Don Says:

Lets not give Flynn all the credit here Glenn. Yes, maybe his style of policing may have been a factor, but it’s the troops who do the dangerous work to get results like this. Flynn may have re-energized the troops with all that he has done such as new uniforms, squad cars, etc. Don’t forget that Flynn has only been in office for eight months and that his stlye cannot reflect the low numbers just yet. Lets wait another year to judge the results and Flynn.

  4. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I agree Don. When he shows results for two years running as I did at #3, then he’ll have demonstrated just how successful his strategy has been. I believe he’s going to do that and more. As for the troops, - IT’S ALWAYS BEEN THE TROOPS WHO GET THE JOB DONE! But they need leadership and commitment and support from the top. That was lacking in the previous administration and that is the major difference.

  5. Dave Reid Says:

I agree both the troops and Flynn deserve some praise at this point. But we should be carefully and see if the trend holds.. If it does then clearly the changes are worth the praise, and it was money well spent bringing in Flynn.

  6. pancho villa Says:

I don’t give Chief Flynn that much credit for the low number of homicides. I give all the credit to the officers on the street and then to the trauma team at Froedtert Hospital for keeping all the thugs and gangbangers alive who arrive with gun shot wounds.

  7. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

I’ve said this many times on the blog and radio shows during the past several years and it bears repeating: You can’t measure success by the homicide rate alone. Even Mrs. Hegerty had a reduction in homicides during her first year (2004). Success is better measured by the reductions of shootings, robberies, and aggravated assaults (which the last release of information a couple months ago showed were down in all categories). Those are offenses which almost always occur on the streets and which Patrol Officers and a good patrol strategy are most likely to impact. Homicides are not crimes which can always be impacted by patrol operations primarily because many are domestic/spousal and occur in residences and/or are related to shaken baby syndrome. That said, I still believe this guy has the correct strategy in place. It’s got to beat the Hegerty strategy (using the term very loosely) of being “reactive”. That’s like saying you can’t shoot unless fired upon or you have to take the first punch before you can take a swing. In short, it’s insane!

  8. Hello Says:

You guys are all wrong and need to stop sucking up to the cops who have nothing to do with stopping crime. It is all about the social programs, the economy and jobs. That is the only time crimes happen is when the economy is down, there are not enough jobs and when social programs are lacking.

Now that the economy is so good and that people have jobs to choose from murders are down. If you jerks would have gotten out of the way of more social programs those first 22 would not have happened!

  9. Mr. Parker Says:

#8 Couldn’t agree with you more,if we had more midnight basketball, more community organizers, more SDC air conditioners, more money flushed down the social program rathole, why we would be living in Utopia.

  10. Pinky Tuscadero Says:

“Hello”…oh my, I would really like to visit the Milwaukee that you are living in. All the social programs and jobs in the world won’t make much of an impact on the crime rate. A lot of the people that commit crimes lead the lifestyle they do because they don’t want to actually work a real job. Why not, you can collect a check every month from the government for a whole range of “disabilities”. So go back to your ivory towers and sip your frapaccino and tell your fairytales to someone else.

  11. Rocketman Says:

OH MY GOD! Hello, where exactly do you live? It must be in Milwaukee, Oregon because it sure is not the Milwaukee I live in. You know I actually like the killing. I wonder why there is none in Bayside, Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Cudahy, Oak Creek and so on? Oh, wait, It’s because those folks go to work and work hard to take care of their families. They have few out of wedlock children, have a moral base, go to church, and make their kids go to school. It’s black on black crime, and I wish more thugs would be killed. Why can’t Black Milwaukee learn a lesson here? Play by the rules or die. It seems pretty simple to me. And you don’t have to stand in line at the welfare building to get a copy of the rules. Quit behaving like sub-humans and you will do fine.

  12. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

The Journal Editorial Board is reporting that shootings are down 15% through August 31st. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=794093
That kind of reduction is an indication to me of a policing strategy that’s working.

  13. gus Says:

McGee in jail, Flynn as Chief.
    The answer is obvious.

    Global warming.

  14. Don Says:

There are thousands of reasons why crime goes up or down.

Hello lives as an anarchist and apparently doesn’t need police protection.

Liberal policies lead to liberal, unconstitutional, programs which do not work. As McCain said, government can’t do it all and should not.

People are responsible for themselves and should be held accountable.

  15. Hello Says:

    Wow,

This is funny. I’m not sure if anyone is still going to read this thread, but here we go.

    For Don, Rocketman, and Pinky….

    To quote myself…

“Now that the economy is so good and that people have jobs to choose from murders are down.”

Does anyone else see a problem with this. Do we all really need to announce sarcasm???

It makes it worse that I am called an “anarchist” after Mr. Parker jumped right in.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone who doesn’t listen to anything you say, but they are just waiting for their turn to … oh wait I lost you didn’t I?

  16. Don Says:

    I don’t understand liberal sarcasm..sorry!!!

  17. Hello Says:

No Don, you don’t understand sarcasm.

  18. Don Says:

Not to keep an argument going, but after reading Hello’s statement several times and as a conservative I may have to apologize for not noticing the 2 paragraph sarcasm. The last line is what I didn’t get. It sounded very liberal like..”If you jerks would have gotten out of the way of more social programs those first 22 would not have happened!”

I took jerks as conservatives who got in the way of implementing more social programs.

Hello, if this was your true sarcastic reply I apologize, if not I’ll pray for you.

    Hello, question..moveon.org or Fox News

  19. Hello Says:

    Don,

apology accepted and thank you. As far as moveon or Fox, I’m not sure that’s a fair question. Kind of like apples and oranges. If you’re asking me where I stand I would say right of center, however unlike this topic I’m sure there are thinks you and I would greatly disagree with. A few more like Palin especially in Wisconsin would nudge me to the right more often

  20. Don Says:

Hello, I think you answered the question.. Fox it is..The right to disagreeis what the founding fathers invisioned in a republican government..feel free..

Conservatism is a term used to describe political philosophies that favour tradition, where tradition refers to various religious, cultural, or nationally defined beliefs and customs.

It is difficult to define the term precisely because different cultures have different established values and, in consequence, conservatives in different cultures have differing goals. (Some conservatives seek to preserve the status quo or to reform society slowly, while others seek to return to the values of an earlier time, the status quo ante).

In a more general sense, politically, Conservatism often refers to Right-Wing politics.

Liberalism is a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal. Modern liberalism has its roots in the Age of Enlightenment.

Liberlism and conservatism is like apples and oranges.
