A Milwaukee police officer had to shoot a thug today, after he pointed a gun at officers. Thankfully, our officers were all unharmed, the thug is in critical condition with a single bullet wound to the midsection.

From the MPD press release:

The incident began about 2:20 p.m. October 1, 2008 in the area of N. 34th and W. Wright Streets when two uniformed Milwaukee Police officers spotted the suspect engaged in a drug transaction. The suspect ignored the officers’ commands to stop and ran.

Two other uniformed police officers assigned to the special Captain’s Car in District 3 also responded to the area and came upon the suspect. While confronting the armed suspect in a yard, one officer stopped the threat by firing his weapon at the suspect, striking him.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene and the suspect was carrying ammunition in his pockets.

As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect was being treated at a local hospital and was in critical condition. None of the officers was injured in the incident.

The suspect, a 20-year-old male, has an extensive arrest record with the Milwaukee Police Department for armed robbery, recklessly endangering safety, pointing and aiming, domestic violence, violation of probation and drug arrests.

The officer involved in the incident is a 37-year-old male with 13 years of service. He is assigned to District 3. He was working on the Captain’s Car, a detail where officers in District 3 seek the most violent suspects wanted for felonies in the city of Milwaukee.

Hopefully that press release gets an edit. Somehow it goes from a subject involved in a drug deal and running away after being told to stop, and suddenly the suspect is armed, and there is an untold threat that is stopped by an officer firing his weapon at the suspect. Geez, somebody butchered that release. Makes it sound like an everyday thing, that Milwaukee police officers are shooting at suspects. Get the press release right before releasing it, or post it properly. I got an idea of what probably happened, but that is just an educated guess. Get it right, and don’t inflame people unnecessarily.

It’s unfortunate that Milwaukee police officers don’t get the same amount of training time and ammunition for firearms training on the range as they used to.
If they got what they used to get, the taxpayers would not have to pay for the medical treatment and costs related to the prosecution and incarceration of someone who was shot by the police.
We all would have been better off if this animal would be taking a dirt nap.

    Huh?

  4. Don Says:

Roscoe is right in that the release, as printed above, should have stated something about the suspect pulling and pointing the firearm at the officer who shot the suspect after encountering the threat of deadly force.

Too bad this A%$#%hole didn’t die. Now the taxpayers are probably going to pay for his medical treatment and thereafter because thugs like this usually don’t have health insurance, which probably would not cover it anyway.

People just don’t learn do they?

  5. Don Says:

Let alone the taxpayer money to imprison this thug at about $25,000/year.

  6. Glenn D. Frankovis Says:

Yup, a double tap in the upper hydraulics might have done it. Bottom line though is that the good guys didn’t get hurt and the thug did. Sounds like a good piece of work by the crime fighters and some need for remedial press release training so that the facts are properly presented to the public. Of course, that might be offensive to some.

  7. Roscoe Rules Says:

Captain, the truth should not be offensive. Wait a minute, I forgot what city I live in. Sorry.

  8. Steve Johnston Says:

The criminal was probably one of the thousands of 20-40 year old black men in Milwaukee riding a 10 speed bicycle with a backpack. No education, no job, no future, no car and no drivers license. In Milwaukee’s inner city, 10 speed bike is accepted as a respectable form of transportation. Pathetic. Comment on that Charley Sykes.

  9. Steve Johnston Says:

All prisoners should be hired enmasse at minimum wage to work for whoever the state deems necessary. Work em at the local canning company under shotgun. How about up the litter they left in their own neighborhood the year before? These apparently are novel concepts to the idiots like mayor Barret. The duration of work should be as long as needed to pay for the fiscal damage their crime created. How many of these lowlifes steal a $20,000 car smash it into a $10,000 street lamp and leave us holding the bill. These guys haven’t a clue what an 8 hour workday looks like-it’s time they learn. Six months of 8 hr/day working has far more reform potential than 6 months of playing cards and telling “tough guy” stories in the county jail.
